Householder helps Cardinals pocket 2-all tie in hockey opener
ALBERT LEA — Fairmont Area senior defender Mackenzie Householder opened the prep hockey season in style Thursday night.
Householder produced a pair of goals to help the visiting Cardinals exit Albert Lea City Arena with a 2-2 nonconference tie in hand against the hometown Tigers.
After the two lineups battled to a scoreless opening period, Householder lit the lamp to stake Fairmont Area to a 1-0 lead with 9:30 remaining in the second segment. The Concordia College (Moorhead) hockey commit converted an unassisted shot into a net-finding short-handed goal.
Albert Lea countered when Liley Steven netted the equalizing goal with 2:17 remaining in the middle period of the game.
Householder then put the Cardinals ahead 2-1 on the scoreboard by blasting home her second goal of the contest with 4:47 remaining in regulation.
Albert Lea’s Lucy Stay, however, converted a power-play opportunity into the tying goal at the 2:29 juncture of the third period.
Fairmont Area goalkeeper Hadley Artz turned away eight of Albert Lea’s shots on net during the overtime segment to help salvage a tie. The Cardinals generated only one shot on goal during the extra session.
The Cardinals produced 27 total shots on goal during the season-opener, highlighted by 13 during the middle 17-minute segment.
Artz recorded a game-leading 39 saves for Fairmont Area (0-0-1), which plays host to Big South Conference opponent Waseca at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Martin County Arena.
