No. 1 Rebels double up Mavericks in Section 3A semifinals, 20-10

SLAYTON — Carter Benda rushed for a game-best 114 yards and two touchdowns to guide the Murray County Central Rebels to a 20-10 Section 3A semifinal football victory over the Martin County West Mavericks on Saturday.

The Class A No. 1-ranked Rebels (10-0) face Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (8-2) at 2 p.m. Friday in the sectional finals at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall.

MCW quarterback Christian Bachenberg completed 16 of 28 passes for 190 yards, including a 5-yard TD strike to Tanner Sinn with 1:29 remaining in regulation. Brandon Bagwell, who opened the playoff game’s scoring with a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter, kicked the ensuing PAT.

Trailing 3-0, Benda crossed the goal line on a 6-yard run with 43 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to stake the Rebels to a 6-3 lead through halftime.

The Rebels converted their first two possessions of the third quarter into 14 points to put the game out of reach.

A 24-yard hook-and-ladder play from quarterback Abe Paulzine to Peyton Coulter to Nathaniel Kleven eventually set up Paulzine’s 1-yard TD plunge.

Benda scored on a 4-yard run before Coulter converted the 2-point run for a 17-point lead with 3:12 left in the third quarter.

Bachenberg threw for every yard of MCW’s 92-yard scoring march, capped by Sinn’s 5-yard TD catch, in the fourth.

Sinn finished with five catches for 70 yards, while teammate Zach Anderson grabbed four passes for 59 yards for MCW (6-4).
