FAIRMONT — Quarterback Zach Jorgensen and No. 1-seeded Fairmont converted their first three possessions into 21 points and never looked back en route to a 40-6 Section 3AAA semifinal football victory over No. 4-seeded Luverne on Saturday night at Mahoney Field.

Jorgensen opened the contest with a 16-yard touchdown scramble before generating 114 of his game-best 244 passing yards and two of his three touchdowns during the hometown Cardinals’ first three offensive series to put the game out of reach.

Class AAA No. 8-ranked Fairmont (8-1) advances to face No. 10-ranked and No. 2-seeded Waseca (9-1) for the Section 3 championship at 1 p.m. Saturday on the turf in Janesville.

“Our guys were dialed in from the very first play,” said Fairmont head coach Mat Mahoney. “We played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and executed in all three phases of the game, including a kickoff return to the house on special teams.

“It was one of our best all-around games.”

After end Hank Artz and defensive company forced a game-opening three-and-out sequence by Luverne, Jorgensen produced the two longest gains of Fairmont’s ensuing 42-yard march.

Jorgensen displayed his elusiveness by reeling off a 16-yard sprint around left end on second down before later capping the march with a 16-yard scoring run over the pylon. Owen Burmeister kicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead at the 6:11 juncture.

Luverne quarterback Casey Sehr lofted a perfect 68-yard sideline strike to Gannon Ahrendt to gain Fairmont’s 12, but linebackers Gavin Rodning and Aden Welcome held their ground to take over on downs for the hometown Cardinals.

Jorgensen opened the eight-play, 89-yard scoring stampede with a 9-yard out to David Maakestad before closing the drive with back-to-back completions. Jorgensen zipped a 16-yard quick-hitter to Maakestad before finding the fleet-footed Eli Anderson near the right sideline for a vapor-trail 36-yard TD sprint. Burmeister split the uprights for a 14-0 lead with no time remaining in the first quarter.

After another Luverne punt, James Johnson pounded out nine yards to reach the visiting Cardinals’ 47 before Jorgensen flipped a screen to Hudson Artz in the left flat. Artz picked up a block near the Luverne sideline and sprinted by the defensive secondary for six more points. Burmeister made it 21-0 with his PAT kick at the 9:55 mark of the second quarter.

Rodning then pounded out 58 of his team-leading 72 yards to highlight Fairmont’s five-play, 64-yard scoring drive to open the third quarter. Rodning capped the scoring sequence with a tackle-breaking 21-yard thundering run to the end zone for a 27-0 lead.

Jorgensen’s interception and 37-yard return then set up Fairmont’s air attack that tacked on seven more points. Jorgensen zipped a right-side spiral to Anderson, who made a defender miss and then sprinted 55 yards for the TD. Burmeister’s kick extended the lead to 34-0 with 2:55 left in the third quarter.

Sehr, who threw for 155 yards, hit Ashton Sandbulte for a 26-yard completion before firing a 9-yarder to Eli Radtke. Sandbulte, who topped all runners with 77 yards, then delivered a tackle-breaking 35-yard TD to spoil Fairmont’s shutout bid with 11:11 remaining.

James Johnson delivered the clash’s final points by returning the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for a TD.

Anderson made four catches for a game-best 113 yards and two TDs, while Maakestad grabbed five throws for 83 yards.
