BLUE EARTH — For the second consecutive meet, a long-standing Fairmont Cardinal track & field record fell.

After Ellie Hernes broke a 17-year-old triple jump record Tuesday, Laura Thompson put her name in the record books again in the 3,200-meter run.

Thompson claimed first in the two-mile event with a time of 11:02.9, beating Becky Lund’s record set in 1989.

The record-setting performance helped lead the Fairmont girls to a near 100-point win. Fairmont’s girls totaled 142 points to lead St. Peter’s 45.5, Marshall’s third-place 44 and Blue Earth Area’s 37.5.

The Cardinal boys took first as well with their total of 93, beating St. Peter’s 76, Marshall’s 62 and BEA’s 41.

Alongside Thompson, Hannah Neusch took second in the 3,200 with a time of 13:04.1 and Carys Gudahl finished third in 13:14.2 to sweep the event for the Cardinals.

Thompson then took no break before anchoring the Fairmont girls’ 4×400 team, finishing third in 4:28 alongside Hadley Artz, Emily Frank and Carissa Saxton. Thompson added a gold in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:15.2, while teammate Macy Hanson finished second at 5:32.3.

Hernes followed up her record-setting performance Tuesday with four golds Thursday.

Hernes took first in the 100-meter high hurdles at 16.2, just beating BEA’s Eloise Blair at 16.8, while Fairmont’s Brooklyn Meyer (17.1) and Hadley Artz (18.0) finished third and fourth, respectively.

Hernes then ran a time of 49.4 to claim gold in the 300-meter hurdles, beating BEA’s Blair, who finished second in 50.4.

Off the track, Hernes continued her dominance in the distance jumps, leaping 16-2 for first in the long jump and 36-6 for first in the triple jump.

Fairmont’s Frank took second in the triple jump at 33-3, while Jazlyn Geerdes claimed third for the Cardinals at 31-6.5.

Meyer added a second-place finish for Fairmont in the long jump at 15-8, while Frank took third at 15-4.

Sabrina Segar continued her strong showing in the sprints during her initial track season, taking first in the 100-meter dash at 13.2, just ahead of teammate Karalyn Closs at 13.5 for second. Meyer claimed fourth with a time of 13.7.

Segar also anchored the 4×100-meter relay team of Closs, Meyer and Ellie Schultze. Fairmont and BEA’s team of Te’a Armstrong, Sophie Keister, Lauren Bleess and Tailor Douglas ran neck-and-neck through three legs, then Segar separated to finish in 53 seconds, ahead of BEA’s time of 54 seconds.

Ellie Schultze grabbed another sprinting gold for Fairmont with a time of 28.1 in the 200-meter dash, while Closs claimed second at 28.5 and BEA’s Bleess took third at 28.9.

The Cardinal girls added three of the top four spots in the pole vault. Schultze, Rachel O’Connor and Segar all cleared 8-0, along with BEA’s Addison Armstrong. Schultze took first, O’Connor finished second, Armstrong claimed third and Segar earned fourth.

Natalie Tonne tossed the shot 34-5 to claim gold for the Cardinals, while Segar took fourth with a throw of 31-3.5. BEA’s Te’a Armstrong heaved the four-kilogram ball 33-11.5 for second.

The Bucs’ 4×200-meter relay team just held off a Fairmont comeback. Te’a Armstrong, Blair, Bleess and Addison Armstrong ran a time of 1:55, while the Cardinals’ Bella Larson, Frank, Saxton and Schultze finished in 1:55.3, with Schultze gaining up to the finish line.

BEA’s Chloe Groe tossed the discus 87-5 for second, while Tonne took third for Fairmont at 85-6.5 and Abigail Cihoski took fourth for the Cardinals at 78-3.

BEA’s Keister and Fairmont’s Shaye Dietz both cleared 4-10 in the high jump for third and fourth, respectively, while the Cardinals’ Hanson added a second-place finish for the Cardinals in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:36.9, while BEA’s Addison Armstrong finished third in 2:40.2 and the Cardinals’ Tabitha Thatcher claimed fourth in 2:43.2.

Corene Moeller took fourth for Fairmont in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.1 and the Cardinals’ 4×800-meter relay team of Thatcher, Ellie Ortega, Gudahl and Neusch used a time of 10:53.2 for third.

“I think we’ve a very balanced team,” Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said. “People might beat us here and there, especially in a meet with a few schools, but we can score in pretty much every event and get our share of firsts. In some places we can get the top three or four and that really helps. I think our biggest strength is the lack of a big weakness.

“Gotta talk about Laura Thompson. She ran another 5:15ish in the mile and the key with her two mile was, I think her slowest lap was 1:20ish. She went about 5:31-5:31 with each mile. I think it helped to have a co-ed race. (William Saari) was very close in front of her and that seemed to really spur her on. But I think what was most impressive was what her slowest lap was, not her fastest. She’s like a metronome, she just keeps ticking. I didn’t see that one coming.”

Fairmont’s boys 4×800 team of Ty Nawrocki, Taylor Austin, Gage Cyphers and Connor Artner started the meet strong, overcoming a 50-meter deficit to claim a win in 9:14.8, while BEA’s team of Eli Pax, Parker Stauffer, Marcus Eckles and Gibson Haase finished fourth in 13:30.8.

The Cardinals’ 4×200-meter relay team of Armando Hernandez, Blaze Geiger, Kainen Craig and Isaiah Lockwood took the lead at the third handoff and held on to it for a first-place time of 1:39.2, while BEA’s team of Waylen Douglas, Jack Norman, Gabe Torres and Bruk Sonnicksen finished second in 1:41.1.

Hernandez added a leap of 39-1 for gold in the triple jump, while Lockwood took second at 38-8.5.

In the high jump, Hernandez cleared 5-10 for second, while Trey Tumbleson grabbed third for the Cardinals with a jump of 5-6.

William Saari added a third-place finish in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:00.7, while he took fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:09.3 for the Cardinals.

Hudson Artz grabbed second in three events for Fairmont. Artz used a time of 11.2 for second in the 100-meter dash, while BEA’s Riley Anderson finished third in 11.6. St. Peter’s Brooks Reicks was the first sprinter to beat Artz this season, using a time of 10.9 for first.

Reicks (22.6) just beat Artz (22.7) again in the 200-meter dash, while he also claimed first in the 400 (50.4) just ahead of Artz’s 50.6 for second. Torres added third for the Bucs in the 400 with a time of 56.3.

BEA’s Nick Frank took gold in the shot put with a heave of 45-5.75, while Fairmont’s Hank Artz (44-0), Noah Rahm (43-0.5) and Sawyer Tordsen (41-11.5) finished second, third and fourth, respectively.

Tordsen followed up with a gold in the discus with a toss of 131-3, while BEA’s Luke Norman threw the 1.6 kilogram disc 127-6 for second and Frank tossed it 125-8 for third. Rahm claimed fourth for the Cardinals at 115-2.

Andrew Johnson ran a time of 2:13.2 to hold off St. Peter’s Marwan Abdi in the 800, while the Cardinals’ Connor Artner took fourth in 2:20.1.

BEA’s Austin Thielfoldt claimed gold for the Bucs in the long jump with a leap of 19-10.5, while Fairmont’s Craig pole vaulted late into the night for fourth at 9-0.

BEA’s 4×100 team of Anderson, Thielfoldt, Jacob Olson and Jack Norman used a time of 46.5 for gold, while the Cardinals’ team of James Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Geiger and Elijah Johnson finished second in 48 seconds.

The Cardinals grabbed another second-place finish in the 4×400.

Austin, David Maakestad, Geiger and Craig combined for a time of 3:40.8, but Marshall’s anchor Bryant Paulsen used an impressive final 100 meters to take a time of 3:39.2 for first.

Maakestad added a third-place finish in a chaotic high hurdles race. Maakestad finished third in 18.3, behind St. Peter’s Alex Bosacker (15.3) who ran through every hurdle, and Marshall’s Demario Gains, who somersaulted and recovered in time for an 18.1.

Maakestad also finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.9, just behind Bosacker, who used a time of 41.8 for second.

“On the boys’ side, St. Peter has a lot of speed and it’s hard to beat a team that has a lot of speed since track is a speed sport,” Bonk said. “I thought the field events came through again big time for us. Probably the event I … Armando (Hernandez) had never triple jumped before and he won it and went over 39 feet, which seemed to pick up Lockwood, too, and he went from jumping 36 to 38. That was a big event for us.”

Fairmont rematches with Blue Earth Area and St. Peter, while adding Waseca for quad action next Friday in St. Peter.
