FAIRMONT — The undefeated season continued for the Fairmont Cardinals.

The Fairmont girls track & field team scored 137 points on its way to a dominant win over the Worthington Trojans and the Adrian/Ellsworth Dragons. The Cardinal boys scored 90 points to beat Worthington’s 67 and the Dragons’ 20.

Ellie Hernes and Laura Thompson continued to claim golds for the Cardinals, collecting seven combined, while Hudson Artz led the Fairmont boys with three golds of his own.

Hernes took the lead around the turn in the 300-meter hurdles en route to finishing in 49.8 seconds to beat teammate Hadley Artz, who finished in second at 55.2. Artz, in turn, just edged Worthington’s Madison Schaefer at 55.4.

Hernes then highlighted her day by jogging directly over to the triple jump pit and broke the 17-year-old Fairmont school record with a leap of 37-3.5, to beat Shanna Dawson’s 2004 record.

Emily Frank (31-9.5), Rachel O’Connor (30-7.5) and Jazlyn Geerdes (30-3.5) finished third, fourth and fifth in the triple jump, respectively, for the Cardinals.

Hernes added a gold in the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.4, while Brooklyn Meyer took second at 17.3, just ahead of Artz at 17.4 for a Cardinal sweep of the top three spots.

Hernes’ final gold came on a jump of 16-1.75 in the long jump, while Meyer took second at 15-4 and Frank finished fourth with a leap of 14-10.5.

Thompson’s first gold of the day came in the 1,600-meter run, where once again she beat all non-Cardinal runners by more than a minute at 5:12.4. Teammates Macy Hanson (5:31.5) and Carys Gudahl (6:08.2) were Thompson’s closest competitors, finishing second and third, respectively.

Thompson then ran a time of 2:28.8 in the 800-meter run for first, while Bella Larson took third for Fairmont at 2:56 and Emily Hagen placed fourth in 2:58.4.

Thompson’s final gold came alongside teammates Ellie Ortega, Larson and Artz in the 4×400-meter relay, where the crew ran a time of 4:34.6 to beat Worthington’s 4:45.7.

In the boys’ competition, Hudson Artz grabbed first in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes for Fairmont.

Artz just beat out Adrian/Ellsworth’s Cole Boltjes in the 100, running a time of 11.2 to Boltjes’ 11.5. Teammate James Johnson claimed third in 11.6.

Artz then had more than a second advantage in the 200 with a time of 22.8, while James Johnson took third at 23.9.

Artz then took the lead in the first turn of the 400 and never gave it up, taking first in 51.9, while Fairmont’s Gage Cyphers finished third in 59.3.

“It was a beautiful night, we get one of these every two years,” Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said with a laugh. “… There were a lot of good performances, seventh through 12th. … Ellie Hernes is obviously a highlight, the old record was 2004, Shanna Dawson, she finished high at state. … She was a great triple jumper and in the Cardinal Hall of Fame, so that’s great company.

“Laura Thompson, Macy Hanson, they just keep having great days in the distance races. Our hurdles are strong, our sprinters can hang in there and keep their own, and we had a lot of good stuff in the field. I think our girls have become a pretty balanced team now.

“The really big stuff starts next week, I think we’re ready to finish as strongly as we’ve started.”

The Cardinal girls started the meet strong in the 4×800 relay race.

Gudahl, Carissa Saxton, Tabitha Thatcher and Hannah Neusch teamed to take first in 10:58.9, beating Worthington’s 11:18.8.

The Cardinal boys’ 4×800 team of Ty Nawrocki, Taylor Austin, Isaac Sheard and Connor Artner then did the same, taking first place in 9:25.6.

The Fairmont boys’ 4×100-meter relay team was able to hold on for gold.

James Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Blaze Geiger and Prince Lebbi teamed for a time of 48 seconds flat, with anchor Lebbi just holding off Adrian/Ellsworth’s anchor Elijah Kruse, who finished at 48.4.

The Fairmont girls swept the top three spots in the 400-meter run.

Corene Moeller and Carissa Saxton ran step-for-step through 300 meters, then Moeller kicked ahead for a time of 1:06.4 for first, while Saxton took second at 1:08.9 and Emma Scheppmann finished third in 1:10.2.

The Cardinal girls added a top-four sweep off the track in the shot put.

Natalie Tonne claimed one of her two golds with a throw of 34-1, while Sabrina Segar took second at 32-4, Abigail Cihoski heaved the shot 28-3 for third and Alexa Bush notched a throw of 26-10.5 for fourth.

Tonne added a gold in the discus with a toss of 96-2.

Sawyer Tordsen claimed another Cardinal gold in the throws, heaving the shot put 44-7.5 for first, while Noah Rahm took third at 42-7.5.

“Cumulative now, we’re 18-0 on both sides and I never would have dreamed that before the season started,” Bonk said. “… It’s just a great, great group. We had more new honor rolls on both sides.

“Hudson (Artz) keeps battling good people and winning, he’s just such a good finisher. He keeps his composure, keeps his form and he’s so tough in the second half of those sprints.”

The Cardinal boys finished the team’s day on the track with a thrilling win in the 4×400.

Andrew Johnson, David Maakestad, Geiger and Kainen Craig combined for a time of 3:43.5, just beating out Worthington’s 3:43.7. Craig held off Worthington anchor Jordan Melendez by less than a stride in his final stretch.

Maakestad complemented his 4×400 win with a gold in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.9, while Craig finished second in 44.7.

Maakestad also claimed second in the 100-meter high hurdles in 18.1, while Trey Tumbleson claimed third in 18.6.

The Fairmont girls added a sweep in the 3,200-meter run.

Macy Hanson took first in 12:14.8, while Neusch finished second in 12:41.8 and Thatcher claimed third in 12:43.7.

The Cardinal girls added every scoring spot in the high jump.

Hannah Linse and Shaye Dietz tied for first, clearing the bar at 4-8, while Saxton took third at 4-6 and Larson finished fourth when she cleared 4-4.

Armando Hernandez took the top spot in the boys’ portion of the event, leaping over the 5-8 bar for gold.

Hernandez added a second-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18-2.5, while Fairmont’s Isaiah Lockwood took third in the triple jump when he landed 36-3.75 into the pit.

Fairmont’s William Saari took third in both the 1,600-meter run (5:02.3) and the 3,200-meter run (10:56.3) with teammates right behind him. Nawrocki (5:23) took fourth in the 1,600 and Alex Cruz (11:46.2) took fourth in the 3,200.

Segar took second for the Cardinal girls in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.2, with Worthington’s Bailey Newman winning by a nose at the same time. Moeller (28.3) and Saxton (28.8) added third- and fourth-place finishes in the girls’ 200-meter dash for the Cardinals.

Off the track, Tordsen took second in the discus with a toss of 122’9, while Noah Rahm took third with a heave of 115-11.

Andrew Johnson added a fourth-place finish for the Cardinal boys in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.8.

The Cardinal girls’ 4×100-meter relay crew of Closs, Meyer, Ellie Schultze and Segar took second in 53.9, while the 4×200-meter team of Larson, Schultze, Frank and Moeller took gold in 1:56.

The Fairmont boys’ 4×200-meter squad of Hernandez, Geiger, Lockwood and Lebbi finished second in 1:40.1.

Craig and Austin added a tie for second in the pole vault when they cleared the bar at 8-0, while Fairmont swept the top four spots in the girls’ portion. O’Connor (8-0) took first, Segar (7-6) took second, Schultze (7-0) finished third and Vanessa Bliesmer (7-0) claimed fourth.

Fairmont travels to Blue Earth for a quad with Blue Earth Area, Marshall and St. Peter at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
