Martins, Mavericks produce diamond triumphs

HERON LAKE — The 2020 Minnesota Class ‘C’ state amateur baseball champion Fairmont Martins improved their record to 2-0 on the season.

Right-handed starting pitcher Adam Schmidt hurled five shutout innings before Ethan Hurn fired two scoreless frames of relief to combine on a four-hit gem to guide Fairmont to a 3-0 victory over the Heron Lake Lakers on Sunday in Heron Lake.

Schmidt displayed stellar command of his pitches by striking out eight without issuing a walk, and allowed three hits en route to earning the win. Hurn notched the save by striking out five, walking one and giving up one hit.

Lance Becker produced an RBI double and scored two of the Martins’ three runs, while Kaiden Musser delivered an RBI single. Eli Anderson contributed a single, while Hurn also scored a run.

The Martins travel to Blue Earth on Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. contest against the Pirates.

Prep Baseball

Martin County West 16, Mountain Lake Area 3 — Jaxson Rohman collected a game-best four hits, scored three runs and produced two RBIs to help power the Mavericks to a non-league triumph over the Wolverines on Saturday in Mountain Lake.

Christian Bachenberg went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and drove in two runs for Martin County West, while Jesse Potts went 3-for-3, crossed the plate three times and generated two RBIs.

Kain Sanders started on the mound, allowing three runs — two earned — on three hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched to net the victory for the Mavericks. Sanders struck out seven batters and issued three walks.

Lucas Jagodzinske recorded one strikeout without issuing a walk, and did not allow a hit or run in 2 1/3 innings of relief for MCW.

Martin County West (6-7) plays Benson at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Legion Field in Marshall.
