FAIRMONT — Ellie Hernes and Hudson Artz each claimed three gold medals to lead Fairmont to a girls and boys track & field triangular sweep on Friday at Bob Bonk Track in Fairmont.

Fairmont’s girls scored 193 points for their win over Luverne (135) and Pipestone Area (34), while the Fairmont boys scored 186 to beat Luverne (105) and Pipestone Area (61).

Artz started his run of golds with a win in the 100-meter dash. Artz crossed in 11.35 seconds, beating Luverne’s Arekel McLaughlin by two steps, then Fairmont’s James Johnson crossed in third at 11.76.

Artz then took the lead heading into the first straightaway in the open 400 and held on to it, finishing in 53.75, before Fairmont’s Gage Cyphers crossed in 59.05 for fourth.

Artz then used a final stretch of the neck-and-shoulders cross in 22.99 in the 200-meter dash for first, beating Luverne’s Ashton Sandbulte by less than two-tenths of a second.

Hernes took her lone win on the track when she jumped out of the blocks in the 100-meter high hurdles and led end-to-end, finishing in 16.8, while Fairmont’s Hadley Artz took third in 17.73 and Brooklyn Meyer claimed fourth in 17.78.

Hernes then leapt nearly two feet further than any other competitor in the long jump, landing 16 feet, 8.25 inches into the pit, while Meyer took seconds at 14-10.5 and the hometown Cardinals’ Emily Frank claimed third at 14-10.25.

Hernes extended her advantage, winning the triple jump by more than three feet, with a hop and skip to 36-7.5, while Frank claimed second at 33-5 and Fairmont’s Jazlyn Geerdes finished third at 31-8.

Fairmont’s girls started the meet with an incredible come-from-behind win in the 4×800-meter relay.

Luverne’s girls jumped ahead to a nearly 100-yard advantage over Fairmont opener Carys Gudahl, which Macy Hanson closed to 80 yards before handing off to Laura Thompson. Thompson not only closed the gap, but overtook both of Luverne’s relay teams to hand off to Hannah Neusch with a 10-yard lead. Neusch extended her advantage to win with a time of 10:23.61 to Luverne’s 10:36.11.

The Fairmont boys didn’t need any heroics, dominating from start to finish. Alex Cruz, Taylor Austin, Isaac Sheard and Ty Nawrocki ran to a time of 9:37.97, nearly 50 seconds better than second place.

Fairmont’s boys then placed second-through-fourth in the high hurdles. David Maakestad (18.69) and Trey Tumbleson (18.7) ran stride-for-stride to take second and third, respectively, while Armando Hernandez took fourth at 21.47.

Maakestad added a gold for Fairmont in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.55, while Kainen Craig (45.7) and Ethan Geerdes (49.84) took third and fourth, respectively.

Hernandez added two golds to his scoring punch for the Cardinals. He cleared the high jump bar at 5-10, eight inches above second place, then leapt 18-10 into the long-jump pit to best teammate Isaiah Lockwood, who finished second at 16-7.5.

Lockwood earned a gold of his own in the triple jump with a leap of 37-4.25, while Kyler Wolters took second at 35-4.75 and Tumbleson took third at 35-2.25.

Ellie Schultze and Meyer ran stride-for-stride in the 100-meter dash to claim the top two spots for Fairmont at 13.96 and 14.07, respectively, while Schultze added a second-place finish in the pole vault when she cleared 7-6 and Rachel O’Connor took third at the same height.

Corene Moeller and Carissa Saxton took the lead out of the initial turn during the 400-meter dash, then stayed close to take the top two spots at 1:05.74 and 1:07, respectively, leading the pack by more than eight seconds.

Thompson continued her dominance of the 1,600-meter run this season with a time of 5:17.95 for first, beating Luverne’s Tenly Nelson by 16 seconds, then Fairmont’s Tabitha Thatcher took third at 5:48.41.

“We were missing several of our top girls for legitimate reasons, I was just thinking I would take a half-point win,” Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said. “I’m very happy. The weather can make all the difference in this sport and I think it had a lot to do with a lot of quality performances. Even the areas that aren’t our better areas, we improved and that’s what you look for. … I thought Laura Thompson had another great day, to bring us from third to first in the relay and then to run almost as fast as Tuesday in the 1,600. A lot of people had really good days.”

Fairmont’s William Saari took the lead early in the 3,200-meter run and dominated start-to-finish with a time of 11:00.24, while Fairmont’s Cruz finished second at 11:32.4.

Luverne’s Jenna DeBates did the same in the girls’ portion, taking first at 11:16.82, but Fairmont’s Hanson broke 12 minutes to claim second at 11:57.03.

In the throws, Natalie Tonne claimed gold for Fairmont when she heaved the shot put 35-9.5, while Sawyer Tordsen took first in the discus with a toss of 130-3 and second in the shot put with a throw of 42-2.5.

Noah Rahm claimed second for Fairmont with a discus toss of 117-10, while Hank Artz took third in the shot put at 41-9. Tonne took fourth for Fairmont in the discus with a toss of 93-0.

Moeller claimed second for Fairmont in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.82, while Bella Larson took third in 29.65.

Thatcher fought her way down the stretch to second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:44.99, while Gudahl took fourth at 2:54.25.

Hernes netted silver in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles when she crossed the line just behind Luverne’s Regan Feit. Feit finished in 48.37 for first, while Hernes finished in 48.57. Hadley Artz took fourth at 54.81.

Shaye Dietz added a second-place finish for Fairmont in the high jump when she cleared 4-8 and Hannah Linse took fourth at 4-6.

Andrew Johnson finished third for Fairmont in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.21, while Saari took third in the 1,600-meter run at 5:03.4.

Craig was the top Cardinal boy in the pole vault, clearing 8-0 for a tie for third.

The Fairmont boys’ 4×100-meter relay team added one last gold for the Cardinals when James Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Elijah Johnson and Prince Lebbi teamed to race around the track in 48.28.

Hernandez, Blaze Geiger, Lockwood and Lebbi ran to third in the 4×200 with a time of 1:41.11, while Andrew Johnson, Geiger, Maakestad and Craig came just short of a comeback win in the 4×400 at 3:42.77 to Luverne’s 3:41.94.

Luverne’s girls dominated the shorter girls relays. Fairmont’s Linse, Meyer, Andrea Rojo and Schultze took second in 54.79 to Luverne’s 54.58 in the 4×100, while Fairmont’s Frank, Larson, Saxton and Schultze took second in 1:54.72 during the 4×200, behind Luverne’s 1:52.84.

Fairmont’s Hadley Artz, Larson, Saxton and Moeller then paired for second in the 4×400 with a time of 4:35.54, behind Luverne’s 4:18.37.

Fairmont will look to continue its undefeated seasons by hosting Worthington and Adrian/Ellsworth at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
