FAIRMONT — Fittingly, one of the top-scoring all-arounders in Martin County Area gymnastics history — Sabrina Segar — powered the Magic to their season’s-best team total during her final prep meet at the program’s 2021 home, the Live Fit Sport & Wellness Center in Fairmont.

The senior captain and perennial state qualifier captured her 10th all-around crown of the current campaign by nearly matching her season-high score to engineer Martin County Area’s 139.7-128.95 Big South Conference dual-meet victory over the Waseca Bluejays on Monday night.

Segar, who produced 36.55 points against Blue Earth Area earlier this season, garnered the vault (9.45), uneven parallel bars (8.675) and floor exercise (9.55) to pace her first-place all-around mark of 36.325 against Waseca during the team’s regular-season finale.

Anna Bachenberg and Hailee Schuett completed MCA’s top-three sweep in the all-around competition by producing respective four-event totals of 35.8 and 33.3. In fact, Bachenberg captured the only piece of equipment that Segar did not win, connecting on a pair of back handsprings to highlight a first-place score of 9.175.

Ellie Schultze executed a one-handed walkover and an aerial on the 4-inch-wide apparatus to net second place behind Bachenberg with an 8.9, Schuett pocketed third with an 8.675, while Segar still managed to garner fourth place with an 8.65, despite a rare fall.

“We had a nice beam set tonight,” MCA head coach Beraiah Peterson said in reference to the Magic’s complete sweep en route to a team total of 35.4. “We also had one of our better bars sets, but it’s like we (coaching staff) told the girls, there’s still room for improvement across the board.”

Peterson said the Magic gymnasts have focused on “cleaning up” their routines during practice, and all of those little improvements paid dividends Monday night.

“We don’t get much time to enjoy it (season-high score) as our Big South cross-over meet against Jackson County Central has been moved to tomorrow,” said Peterson, whose lineup carries a 9-1 dual-meet record against the host Huskies at 6 p.m. tonight in Jackson.

Now, the Magic will look to carry their momentum from Monday night into tonight’s conference showdown after Bachenberg delivered another strong performance to complement Segar’s top-scoring ways.

Bachenberg turned a Tsuk to earn runner-up honors (9.175), pocketed second on the unevens (8.2) and nailed down the No. 2 spot on the floor with a 9.2 to pace her solid all-around total.

Hannah Linse and Ellie Hernes contributed third- and fourth-place vaults at 8.85 and 8.725, respectively, for MCA, while Schuett finished fourth on the unevens with a 7.95. The Magic’s Anna Utermarck chipped in a third-place total of 8.65 on the floor to follow only Segar and Bachenberg in that event.

Senior Emily Hagen closed out her final home prep gymnastics meet by winning the junior varsity all-around crown with a 31.45, highlighted by a first-place score of 8.45 on the floor exercise, to guide the Magic to a 125.8-108.9 victory over Waseca on Monday night.

MCA senior Sady Ringnell posted an 8.25 to place third on the floor to top her effort in the junior varsity dual meet.
