ARMSTRONG — North Union guard Gage Madden scored 16 points, but that wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the Warriors’ offensive troubles during Friday night’s Top of Iowa Conference basketball game.

Senior guard Zach Suby scored 22 points and distributed four assists, while teammate Hayden Hutcheson netted a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds to help the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura to a 66-32 rout over the North Union Warriors.

The Cardinals started the game on a 9-2 run as Suby scored a quick five points making a layup and 3-pointer in the early minutes. Madden responded for the Warriors by hitting a jumpshot, dished an assist to center Logan Odegaard for a layup and junior guard Nick Schiltz made a 2-pointer to bring the Warriors back to 9-6.

The Cardinals responded behind Hutcheson, who got going with a layup and then made a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter to put the Cardinals up 16-10. Madden provided most of the offense for the Warriors by scoring eight of the home team’s 10 first-quarter points.

The second quarter was all the Cardinals needed to build their lead. The Warriors failed to score a single point in the 8-minute segment. Their only real opportunity to score were four free throws that were missed. The Cardinals recorded four steals and outscored the Warriors 22-0 en route to a 38-10 halftime edge.

Cardinal guard Isaac Knutson stole the ball and made a layup to make the score 18-10. Sophomore guard Braden Boehnke and Suby contributed back-to-back 3s to increase the lead 24-10. GHV finished the quarter up by 28 behind Suby’s 15 first-half points.

Hutcheson and Suby picked up right where they left off in the third quarter. Both got their offense going in the interior scoring on layups. Warrio forward Jay Heinen made a layup and Madden made a 3-pointer to cut the lead 40-18.

Hutcheson finished 10 third-quarter points, junior forward Evan Sloan contributed a steal and layup, and senior guard Jack Ermer contributed a 3-pointer to put the Cardinals up 56-30.

Madden added eight third-quarter points to finish the game with 16 points. Warriors’ second-leading scorer junior Nick Schiltz contributed five third-quarter points to finish with seven points.

The fourth quarter was similiar to the second. The Warriors were held to only two points from senior center Carter Anderson. Hutcheson scored four more points, giving him19 points for the game, while senior guard Braden Boehnke added a 3 to end the Warriors night.

North Union (1-9) travels to Graettinger, Iowa, Tuesday night to play Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayshire.
