FAIRMONT — The No. 5-seeded Fairmont Cardinals’ Section 3AAA quarterfinal football game against the No. 4-seeded Tri-City United Titans at 7 p.m. tonight in Montgomery has been cancelled.

Due to an increase in active coronavirus numbers in Le Sueur County, the TCU school district opted for an all-distance learning mode, with no extracurricular activities.

Fairmont (1-3) travels to No. 1-seeded Luverne (5-1) Saturday for a 1 p.m. sectional semifinal kickoff.

TCU ended its regular season with a 3-3 record.

‘C’ volleyball narrowly falls

FAIRMONT — St. James Area edged Fairmont in C-squad volleyball action, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13, Saturday at Cardinal Gym.

Nevaeh Rahm collected nine kills, eight digs and six service aces to top the Cardinals, Rylyn Larsen tallied nine digs, while Grace Pendergast distributed six set assists.

Fairmont travels to Waseca tonight.

Squirts open season with triumph

FAIRMONT — Bennett Draper scored a goal and assisted on Hadyn Lillevold’s game-winning blast to pace the Fairmont Squirts’ 2-1 decision over Windom during season-opening hockey action on the road Sunday.

Draper’s unassisted goal came in the second period, while Lillevold’s score occurred in the third frame.

Fairmont outshot Windom by a 14-7 margin.

The Fairmont Squirts (1-0) play Okoboji at 1 p.m. Saturday at Boji Bay Ice Arena in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

12U hockey loses opener

FAIRMONT — Marshall netted a 6-4 win over the Fairmont Car Parts Direct 12U girls hockey team Saturday in Marshall.

Brooklyn Murphy earned a hat trick with three goals for Fairmont, while Maia Goerndt contributed one score in their opener.

Goalie Lexi Sundeen made 27 saves for Fairmont, which had 20 shots on goal.

Fairmont Car Parts Direct 12U girls hockey team (0-1) plays host to Windom at 11 a.m. Saturday at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.
