Saints’ 2nd half bests Cardinal boys; Fairmont Area girls tie St. Peter

FAIRMONT — The unseasonably cold and damp weather conditions Tuesday night wreaked havoc with the scoreboard’s electrical functions at Jeffery Kot Soccer Complex.

The Fairmont Area Cardinals boys lineup also experienced a bit of a power outage in the second half of its Big South Conference game with St. Peter, managing only one shot on goal during the final 40 minutes in Fairmont.

Brooks Reicks’ second-half breakaway goal snapped a 1-all tie at intermission before Zechariah Kyoore delivered an insurance goal with 23:22 remaining in regulation to pace the visiting Saints’ 3-1 victory over the Cardinals in front of a sparse crowd.

“You can’t score if you can’t get any shots on goal. That’s as simple as it gets,” said Fairmont Area head coach Brady Meyer, whose team got outshot by an 8-1 margin in the second half. “Once again, we proved we could match up with them (the Saints) during the first half, but we just didn’t have any energy in the second half.”

“We did a great job of crashing the net after our initial shots tonight,” said St. Peter head coach Zach Claussen.

Claussen’s post-game analysis hit the bull’s-eye as Seth Reicks did exactly that to open the game’s scoring at the 34:35 juncture of the first half. Saint striker Cooper Dean drilled a left-wing blast that Cardinal goalkeeper Bryant Armitage made a stretched-out diving save on, but Seth Reicks alertly collected the carom on the right doorstep and chipped the rebound into the twine for a 1-0 St. Peter lead.

Isaiah Lebbi, however, displayed his tenacity seven minutes later to generate the equalizer for Fairmont Area. St. Peter’s Kelson Lund headed away an arching kick near the top of the box, but Lebbi alertly curled a right-to-left hook past Saints’ netminder Joshua Robb from the point for a 1-all tie with 27:23 left in the first half.

Armitage kept the Saints off the scoreboard by making seven of his 13 saves during the remainder of the first half, while striker Joshua Bergt nearly staked the Cardinals to a lead with 12:24 to go before intermission.

Midfielder Cole Christopher worked the ball to the middle of the field before striker Matthew Kotewa lofted the ball toward a scrum near the net. Bergt’s leaping header just missed to keep the score deadlocked.

Brooks Reicks later displayed his speed by sprinting by Fairmont Area’s last two lines of defense before rocketing a right-to-left goal into the net for a 2-1 St. Peter lead just 5:25 into the second half.

The Saints executed Claussen’s game plan to a tee again when Logan Moe’s direct kick over the Cardinals’ wall trickled away from Armitage after his partial block and Kyoore tapped in the rebound for an insurance goal at 23:22.

Fairmont Area (0-3-1) hits the road to New Ulm on Friday night, while St. Peter (2-0-2) plays host to Mankato Loyola on Friday night.
