Cardinal tennis team extends winning streak to 4 in a row

SLEEPY EYE — Four in a row.

The Fairmont Cardinals swept both the singles and doubles brackets to post a 7-0 triumph over the River Valley Wildcats during Big South Conference East Division girls tennis action Thursday in Sleepy Eye.

Fairmont completed its double-dual seasonal series with River Valley by netting a second shutout.

Ellie Hernes, who missed the Cardinals’ initial three duals due to an injury, made her season debut by teaming with Libby Totzke at No. 2 doubles. Hernes and Libby Totzke combined to net a 6-0, 6-4 winning decision over the Wildcats’ Sydne Wahl and Erika Lozano.

Lauren Davis and Emily Hagen blended court skills at the No. 1 doubles position to capture a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Megan Stevens and Alexis Garza for Fairmont, while Cardinal teammates Anika Haugen and Hope Klanderud bested Presley Dockter and Maya Nelson at the third spot in the bracket, 6-3, 6-1.

Claire Nemmers returned to the No. 1 singles position for Fairmont and disposed of Brooklyn Moldan via back-to-back 6-1 set wins.

Briana Joseph nearly matched Nemmers’ performance by serving a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Kaydince Thoms during second singles action to pack scoring punch for the Cardinals.

Maggy Totzke proved perfect by needing only the minimum dozen games to exit the Sleepy Eye courts with a pair of 6-0 set victories over Kiera Lafferty at No. 3 singles.

Abi Peyman completed Fairmont’s singles-bracket sweep and her team’s shutout effort by rallying from a 6-2 opening-set loss to Taylor Berkner at No. 4 singles. The Cardinal freshman assembled a second-set comeback to net a 7-6 (7-4) triumph before winning the supertiebreaker, 10-6.

Fairmont (4-0) travels to St. Peter on Tuesday for another Big South Conference East Division meet.
