Fairmont VFW drops twinbill

NEW ULM – Fairmont VFW Post 1222 fell twice during doubleheader action against New Ulm Gold in New Ulm on Saturday, 8-7 and 6-5.

In Game 1, New Ulm jumped to a lead early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added another in the second.

Fairmont fought back to tie, scoring four runs in the top of the third, but Gold built a big inning of its own, responding with three runs in the bottom of the third.

Fairmont again scored three runs to tie in the top of the fourth, but New Ulm took the lead in the bottom half of the inning and held it through the fifth for a five-inning win.

Lincoln Becker led Post 1222 with three hits, while Landen Meyerdirk had two and Aden Welcome added a hit for Fairmont.

Welcome and Becker each added two RBIs, while Levi Pooley and Mathew Cone each walked twice.

Carsen Musser and Brendan Schmidtke split work on the mound, each pitching two innings. Musser added three strikeouts.

Fairmont totaled eight hits and four errors, while New Ulm collected five hits and made three errors.

In Game 2, it was Fairmont that jumped out front, scoring two runs in the top of the first.

New Ulm’s bats kept working in the second game, scoring one in the first and two in the second to take the lead back from Post 1222.

Fairmont then built a three-run top of the third, before New Ulm scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie.

The 5-5 tie held until the bottom of the fifth, when New Ulm scored a run with two outs to take a second five-inning win.

Meyerdirk knocked two more hits in Game 2, while Pooley collected two RBIs.

Meyerdirck also added three innings on the mound and struck out three while Becker pitched the other 1 2/3 innings for Fairmont.

Fairmont Post 1222 plays host to Sleepy Eye at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Fairmont.
