Martins take down Union Hill

UNION HILL – In a rescheduled matchup after a home cancellation, the Fairmont Martins ran through the Union Hill Bulldogs, 12-2, during amateur baseball action Friday in Union Hill.

Luke Becker hit a leadoff home run to put the Martins ahead after the first, then the Martins added three runs in the third.

Luke Becker led off the third with a double, before a Derek Shoen walk, a Levi Becker-forced error, a Tyler Tennyson single, a Spencer Chirpich walk and a Christian Petschke walk led to the extended lead.

The Martins added three more runs in the fourth after Ethan Hurn and Shoen singled and Levi Becker hit a three-run home run, putting the Martins ahead 7-2.

That score held through the seventh, then the Martins continued adding on.

In the eighth, Hurn singled, Luke Becker walked, Jack Waletich hit an RBI double, Shoen singled, Tennyson hit a sacrifice fly and Chirpich singled.

In total, the Martins added another three runs.

Two more came in the ninth on Adam Schmidt and Hurn’s back-to-back home runs.

Josh Smith started on the mound for the Martins, throwing four innings and allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out four.

Schmidt came on in relief and pitched the next four innings, not allowing a run.

Tennyson came on for the final inning, striking out three through the five batters he faced, allowing two singles.

Luke Becker led the Martins’ offense with a home run, a double and a walk, while Levi Becker had a three-run home run.

Hurn singled twice and hit a home run, while Schmidt homered.

Petschke walked twice, once for an RBI, Shoen singled twice and walked, Tennyson singled and had a sacrifice fly for two RBIs, while Chirpich walked and singled in a run.

The Martins find out their seeding for the first round of the playoffs today. They then go to Jackson for a 2 p.m. matchup on Sunday.
