Martins sink Wood Ducks in 10-3 exhibition game

BANCROFT, Iowa — The Fairmont Martins amateur baseball team won its third consecutive exhibition game on Friday night.

Set-up man Adam Schmidt notched seven strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of near flawless relief to notch the win, while closer Paxton Gravlin fanned two in the ninth to seal the Martins’ 10-3 triumph over the St. Clair Wood Ducks in Bancroft.

Ethan Hurn started on the mound for Fairmont, allowing two unearned runs on only one hit in 4 1/3 innings. Hurn recorded five strikeouts and issued three walks.

Schmidt issued only one base-on-balls and allowed just one hit during his middle relief stint to earn the victory for the Martins. Gravlin also walked two in relief.

Luke Becker and Derek Shoen combined to stake Fairmont to a quick 1-0 advantage during the bottom of the first inning. Becker reached on a Wood Ducks’ miscue, stole second, advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on Shoen’s RBI groundout.

Shoen and Tyler Tennyson each produced RBI singles to help highlight the Martins’ three-run offensive outburst during the third inning en route to a 4-0 lead.

Blake Crawmer singled and reached second via a St. Clair error before circling the bases on Spencer Chirpich’s RBI single. Chirpich, who reached second on the throw to the plate, reached third on Luke Becker’s groundout. Shoen then singled home Chirpich before eventually scoring on Tennyson’s RBI single later in the at-bat.

Ahead 4-2 going into the sixth, Christian Petschke drew a walk, Crawmer singled and Chirpich bunted both teammates into scoring position. Carter Bell, pinch-running for Petschke, scored on a wild pitch before Crawmer wheeled home when Shoen’s hard-hit grounder was mishandled.

Tennyson walked to trigger the Martins’ two-run seventh. Tennyson later scored and Hurn advanced all the way to third when Hurn’s single was mishandled. Hurn later scored on a wild pitch for an 8-2 lead.

Luke Becker and Shoen combined for two more runs in the eighth inning. Becker singled and raced home on Shoen’s RBI triple before Shoen scored on Tennyson’s RBI groundout.

The Martins (4-1) are scheduled to play Bancroft and Lonsdale on Saturday, June 20, in Bancroft, Iowa.
