Lofstrom, Laverty power North Union hoopsters to victory

ARMSTRONG — North Union’s Chloe Lofstrom and May Laverty combined for 40 points and 11 rebounds to power the Warriors to a 65-48 Top of Iowa Conference basketball victory over the Lake Mills Bulldogs in their final game of the regular season Monday night.

Lofstrom poured in a game-best 24 points behind 11-for-19 field goal shooting and pulled down a team-high six boards, while Laverty netted 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field to complement hauling in five rebounds.

Lofstrom also distributed three assists, while teammate Olivia VonBank netted seven points. Vanessa VonBank and Sam Nielsen each contributed six points to North Union’s winning performance, while teammate Hope Steinberger doled out six assists and pocketed seven steals.

Lofstrom and Laverty paced the Warriors’ 29-for-62 field-goal shooting effort, that included 5 of 17 from 3-point range. The Warriors made just 2 of 3 free throws.

North Union stormed to a 20-2 first-quarter lead en route to a 34-11 advantage by intermission.

North Union (14-7) plays host to Pocahontas Area at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, in an Iowa Class 2A, Region 2 quarterfinal in Armstrong.

Luverne 69, Martin County West 44 — The Cardinals built a 33-22 halftime lead and never trailed to net a 25-point nonconference win over the Mavericks on Monday night in Luverne.

Marissa Whitehead produced 16 points, distributed five assists and pulled down five rebounds to help pace the Mavericks, while Emily Anderson supplied 10 points.

Gabby Lange supplied eight points, grabbed a team-best eight boards and pocketed three steals for MCW, Liz Fisher scored seven points and garnered six rebounds, while Kari Matejka distributed three assists.

The Mavericks made 17 of 37 field goals overall, including 3 of 4 from behind the 3-point arc, and added a 7-for-13 effort from the free throw line.

Martin County West (10-10) plays host to Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday night in Trimont.

Boys Basketball

Lake Mills 102, North Union 36 — The Iowa Class 1A, No. 4-ranked Bulldogs collared the Warriors by clearing the century mark in scoring during Top of Iowa Conference action Monday night in Armstrong.

Gage Madden netted 11 points to top the Warriors, Braden Pierce scored nine points, while Robert Ortman generated five points and grabbed six rebounds.

Aidan Fries chipped in five points, while Noah Morphew distributed three assists for the Warriors, which made 15 of 47 field goals overall and did not attempt a free throw on the game.

North Union (2-18) closes out the regular season by playing host to West Bend-Mallard on Friday night in Armstrong.
