Waseca bests Fairmont hoopsters

FAIRMONT — Waseca point guard Gus Boyer displayed the all-around skills that earned her a basketball scholarship to the University of Minnesota-Duluth next season during Thursday night’s Big South Conference clash in Fairmont.

The 5-foot-10 Boyer produced game-best totals of 25 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals to engineer the visiting Bluejays’ 66-37 triumph over Fairmont at Cardinal Gym.

Ironically, Boyer — along with fellow senior standouts Rachel Breck and Hannah Potter, who scored 13 and 10 points, respectively — needed the B-squad game to thaw out before warming up the Fairmont gymnasium’s nylon cords on a combined 19-for-32 shooting for 59 percent.

“It seems like every time we’ve come here to play basketball, we get a bus that the heater doesn’t work,” said Breck, who will play both basketball and volleyball at Iowa Lakes Community College in 2020-21.

Potter fueled Waseca’s initial 8-0 run off the opening tip by burying a 3-pointer and a putback before Boyer swooshed the first of her three trifectas on the night.

Emma Gudahl, who topped Fairmont by delivering 10 points and three steals, hit a runner in the lane to end the home team’s early cold shooting start.

Breck converted a Boyer assist for a low-post basket to ignite the Bluejays’ ensuing 9-0 surge before Boyer fed 6-2 freshman post Kloe Wadd for a lay-in before drilling a 3 and 12-foot pull-up jumper in the lane to extend the lead to 17-2.

Fairmont’s Faith Olson tossed in a 3-pointer and teammate Rayah Quiring worked the baseline for a leaner, but Boyer reeled off half of Waseca’s ensuing 10-0 run to lead by 20 with 5 minutes remaining in the opening half.

Cadence Becker ended the Cardinals’ scoring drought by tossing in two of her seven points off a Maggy Totzke assist. Gudahl hit a cutter on the front side of another Boyer 3 before Quiring hit a solo free throw and Olson chipped in a traditional 3-point play to whittle Fairmont’s deficit to 30-15 with 1:30 to go before halftime.

Boyer, however, literally had the final word of the half, getting fouled on a last-second 3 and connected on all three charity tosses for a 37-17 lead by intermission.

Gudahl’s steal-turned-basket and a one-and-one conversion inched Fairmont as close as it would get at 47-25 midway through the second half.

Boyer answered with her third trey and a 15-foot baseline jumper off a Breck assist to help the Bluejays put the final outcome in the books.

Potter collected five rebounds, three steals and three assists to complement her 10-point outing, while Breck garnered seven boards to go with her 13-point effort.

Quiring contributed seven points and a team-best seven rebounds off the Cardinals’ bench, while Olson finished with six points.

Fairmont (8-7) is scheduled to host Redwood Valley at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, while Waseca (12-3) is slated to hit the road to Marshall on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. game.
