Fairmont plays host to Big South Showcase games

FAIRMONT — If you enjoy watching high school basketball, then look no further than Cardinal Gym in Fairmont to get your fill and then some.

All 13 Big South Conference boys basketball programs, plus non-league invitee Southwest Minnesota Christian, will square off in a sequence of seven consecutive contests, with action tipping off at 10 a.m. today.

“For the price of admission, it’s one of the best deals that money can buy,” Fairmont High School activities director Mat Mahoney said in reference to the all-day Big South Showcase extravaganza.

The entry fee will be $7 per adult and $5 per student, and is good for all seven games.

“We have four programs ranked in the top 10 of the Minnesota Associated Press’ state polls, so there should be a lot of good basketball being played,” added Mahoney.

The Worthington Trojans (2-2) will be the first representative from the former Southwest Conference to hit the hardwood court at 10 a.m. today against the New Ulm Eagles (0-4), who will represent the former South Central Conference.

Game 2 will pit a pair of Class AAA ranked lineups at 11:30 a.m. when the No. 5 Marshall Tigers put their spotless 3-0 overall record to the test against the No. 8 St. Peter Saints, who enter today with a perfect 5-0 mark.

The Pipestone Area Arrows (1-2) battle the St. James Area Saints (3-2) in a 1 p.m. contest, followed by the Blue Earth Area Bucs (1-1) taking on the Redwood Valley Cardinals in a 3 p.m. tipoff.

The Class AA No. 1-ranked Waseca Bluejays (3-2) will square off against the Jackson County Central Huskies (2-0) in an East-West battle at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Class A No. 5-ranked Southwest Minnesota Christian Eagles (3-0) clashing with the Windom Area Eagles (0-3) at 6 p.m.

Host Fairmont then caps the seven-game string by putting its 2-0 record against Luverne (2-1) in a battle of Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

Editor’s Note: The starting times for Games 2 through 7 are approximate tipoff times, but may vary due to the length of the previous contests.
