Giants post sub-section volleyball win over Cardinals

LE SUEUR — The No. 2-seeded Le Sueur-Henderson Giants proved too tall an order to overcome for the No. 7-seeded Fairmont Cardinals during Thursday night’s Section 2AA, South Sub-Section volleyball quarterfinals.

The Giants posted consecutive wins of 25-7, 25-12 and 25-13 over the Cardinals to complete the three-game postseason sweep.

Le Sueur-Henderson (14-16) advances to face No. 3-seeded Waseca in a 7:30 p.m. sub-section semifinal Tuesday night at Mankato East High School. Waseca topped No. 6-seeded Sibley East by respective scores of 25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 25-13.

Fairmont ended its season with a 4-19 overall record.

Natalie Tonne pounded seven kills to top Fairmont’s offense, while Bryn Miller and Kylee Harder chipped in three spike-winners apiece.

Sabrina Segar doled out seven set assists and made five digs for the Cardinals, while Andrea Westcott distributed seven set assists and went 5 of 6 serving.

Cambrie Anderson produced seven digs and served 7-for-7, Sophie Johnson tallied eight digs and went 4 of 5 at the line, while Jen Moeller scooped up six opponents’ spikes and went 6-for-7 serving for Fairmont.

St. Peter 3, Blue Earth Area 0 — The No. 1-seeded Saints downed the No. 8-seeded Bucs in three straight games, 25-12, 25-19, 25-7, during Thursday night’s Section 2AA, South Sub-Section quarterfinals in St. Peter.

Alicia Machacek tallied five kills and three ace blocks for Blue Earth Area, while teammate Heidi Herrmann supplied five kills and four ace blocks.

Brita Hougen made seven digs and went 6-for-6 serving for the Bucs, Liz Beeler distributed 12 set assists and also went 6 of 6 serving, while Eloise Blair led the defense with 15 digs.

Miya Gustafson served 9 of 10 for five points to top BEA, while Natalie Huse and Emma Langager each went 6-for-6 serving on the match. Maci Frommie and Hougen added two kills apiece.

Blue Earth Area ended its season with a 2-27 record.

Top-seeded St. Peter (22-8) advances to face No. 4-seeded Tri-City United in a 6 p.m. sub-section semifinal Tuesday night at Mankato East. TCU downed Maple River by respective scores of 25-8, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17.

Section 2A Playoffs

Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 3, Martin County West 0 — The Class A No. 2-ranked and No. 1-seeded Bucs coasted to wins of 25-8, 25-9, 25-7 over the No. 8-seeded Mavericks during Section 2A, South Sub-Section quarterfinal action Thursday in Waterville.

WEM (29-2) advances to face No. 5-seeded St. Clair in a 6 p.m. sub-section semifinal Tuesday night at St. Peter High School. St. Clair upended No. 4-seeded Springfield, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.

Martin County West ended its season with an 8-20 record.

Logan Kosbab produced nine digs for the Mavericks, while Bella Bicknase and Jenna Clow supplied four digs each.

Emily Dunlop and Taylor Elliott chipped in three digs and two blocks apiece, Gabby Lange added two rejections, while Shaylynn Anderson doled out three set assists.
