Windom zips MCW spikers

WINDOM — The Windom Area Eagles produced straight game wins of 25-18, 25-14, 25-11 to sweep the Martin County West Mavericks during nonconference volleyball action Monday night in Windom.

Emily Dunlop generated seven kills to top the Mavericks’ frontline offensive attack, while chipping in five digs on the defensive side.

Setter Shaylynn Anderson doled out eight assists, while teammate Bella Bicknase distributed five set assists to complement a team-leading eight digs for MCW.

Jenna Clow produced seven digs to go with two ace serves for the Mavericks, while Logan Kosbab tallied three kills and three digs.

Makena Larson and Gabby Lange each contributed two blocks to the blue-and-black lineup’s defensive performance.

Martin County West (5-15) travels to Madelia tonight for a 7:15 p.m. Valley Conference match.

C-squad grid team goes 1-1

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinal C-squad gridders produced a 1-1 record during a recent five-day span.

Brock Lutterman scored on a 15-yard touchdown and Owen Burmeister kicked what proved to be the game-winning extra point in Fairmont’s 7-6 victory over New Ulm last Thursday in New Ulm.

David Maakestad rushed for 60 yards on 13 carries for the Cardinals, Lutterman gained 40 yards on six totes, while Trey Tumbleson caught three passes for 22 yards.

Belle Plaine edged Fairmont, 8-6, in C-squad action Monday in Belle Plaine.

James Johnson recovered a fumble and returned it 45 yards to account for the Cardinals’ only points of the game.

Maakestad rushed 15 times for 50 yards, while Brendan Schmidtke completed 7 of 10 passes for 70 yards.

Alexander Moeller recorded eight tackles for the Cardinals, David Barrientos made six stops, while Jackson Holmers netted a quarterback sack.

Fairmont travels to Norwood Young America next Monday for a game.

7th-grade zips MCW football

FAIRMONT — Elijah Johnson returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown to help Fairmont shut out Martin County West, 22-0, in seventh-grade football action last Thursday in Trimont.

Kilias Nye-Contreras added a fumble recovery, while Lucas Rosburg contributed an interception to the Cardinals’ winning ways.

Hank Artz produced one rushing touchdown, caught a scoring pass from Hayden Toomer and scored a pair of 2-point conversions for Fairmont.

Fairmont plays host to Jackson County Central at 4:30 p.m. today at Mahoney Field in Fairmont.
