Cardinals derail Hubmen, 4-0

FAIRMONT — A second-half scoring spree led the Cardinals to the next round.

No. 10-seeded Fairmont Area beat the No. 15-seeded Jordan Hubmen 4-0 in a first-round Section 2A boys soccer matchup Monday night at Kot Soccer Complex in Fairmont.

Fairmont Area (8-8-1) moves on to face No. 7-seeded Marshall (7-4-4) at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall at 7 p.m. Thursday. Jordan finished its season with a record of 0-15.

Fairmont Area head coach Brady Meyer said his team will have a couple of key things to focus on to try to get the win Thursday.

“We’re gonna be working on possession,” Meyer said. “We’re gonna focus on how to defend against their (Marshall’s) attack, too. That’s going to be a point of emphasis for us the next two days.”

The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early when Rene Morales Jr. turned a Dan Brummond corner kick from the left side into a header that hit the bottom right corner of the net. Morales’ goal came with 36:10 left in the first half.

The Cardinals maintained control throughout the half, outshooting Jordan 7-0 in the opening segment, but could not get another goal.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Fairmont Area’s next goal hit the twine.

Kaleb Hoye dribbled past defenders into the left side of the goalie box, then chipped a shot over Jordan keeper Joe Hulet and into the right side of the webbing with 37:11 left in the matchup.

Juan Santana Sanz joined the scoring when he collected a deep pass, dribbled by a defender into a one-on-one with Hulet. Santana Sanz then dribbled past Hulet, who had come out of the net, and tapped the ball into the middle of the goal.

Amos Broomfield scored the Cardinals’ final goal when he collected a pass from Campbell Krusemark out in front of the Hubman defensive line, then dribbled into the goalie box for a one-on-one with the retreating keeper. Broomfield paused and waited before hitting the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to put Fairmont Area ahead 4-0 with 3:04 remaining.

Meyer said a couple of key changes helped the Cardinals.

“I thought we played pretty good today,” Meyer said. “We held good possession, which was a big key for us, that’s something we’ve been working on and it paid off today. We changed up a few things on top and it seemed to work out for us, that created some more scoring opportunities.”

Unfortunately for Fairmont Area, defender Ryan Hennager had to be driven off the field after taking contact in the middle of his shot. Hennager was immediately taken to the hospital for a left ankle injury.

The Cardinals outshot the Hubmen 15-1 in the contest.

Fairmont Area goalkeeper Tyson Geerdes made one save to net the shutout.
