Fairmont tennis bests New Ulm; Big South finale suspended

NEW ULM — Fairmont head coach Eric Johnson shuffled his Cardinal girls tennis lineup Tuesday and exited the New Ulm courts with a 6-1 regular-season victory over the hometown Eagles.

Claire Nemmers and Briana Joseph, Fairmont’s regular Nos. 1 and 2 singles players, respectively, joined forces at No. 1 doubles and breezed to back-to-back 6-0 set wins over Bethany Janssen and Lauren Mages.

Johnson then assembled a ‘sister act’ at second doubles as Libby Totzke and twin sibling Maggy Totzke needed only one game more than the minimum dozen to net a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Ellie Wilker and Gabby Sammons.

Bergen Senf moved from No. 1 doubles to No. 3 doubles, teaming with new partner Emily Hagen to generate a 6-3, 6-2 win over New Ulm’s Emily Guggisberg and Katie Wilker.

Lauren Davis, Senf’s usual No. 1 doubles partner, outlasted Abby Hietala at second singles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, while Ellie Hernes made the transition from doubles to No. 3 singles and outslugged Malia Emerson, 7-6, (7-0), 6-3, for Fairmont.

Shannon Green capped the Cardinals’ team points by serving a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Lydia King at the No. 4 position in the singles bracket.

New Ulm’s Makiah Otto netted the home team’s solo point by defeating Lauren Green — who made the transition from fourth singles to No. 1. Otto captured a 6-1, 6-4 decision.

Fairmont (15-7) awaits the results of this week’s seeding meeting for its Section 3A Team Meet quarterfinal meet on Monday.

The Big South Conference championship dual meet between the Class A No. 6-ranked Blue Earth Area Bucs and the No. 7-ranked St. James Area Saints on Tuesday in St. James was suspended due to lightning and rain.

All three doubles matches had split their first two sets and were heading into respective decisive third sets, while all four singles matches were in their respective second sets.

The championship match will resume play at the same junctures in which they exited on Thursday in St. James at a time to be determined.
