Fairmont tennis split triad; No. 6 B.E. Area zips TCU

MOUND — The Fairmont Cardinals nearly swept the girls tennis triangular Saturday in Mound, coasting by Southwest Christian, 5-2, before losing a down-to-the-wire 4-3 decision to the host Mound Westonka White Hawks.

Claire Nemmers, Briana Joseph and Lauren Green captured three of the four singles matches during the Cardinals’ dual meet with Southwest Christian.

Nemmers rolled by Lauren Jones at the No. 1 singles position, 6-0, 6-2, Joseph played only 13 games to net a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Julia McIntosh at second singles, while Lauren Green outslugged Lily Schwen in a third-set supertiebreaker after splitting their third singles clash’s first sets, 3-6 and 6-4, respectively. Green captured the team tally via a 10-7 triumph in the extra session.

Bergen Senf and Lauren Davis combined court skills at No. 1 doubles to outlast SWC’s Greta Schwarz and Hannah Schwarz, 6-4, 2-6, (10-3).

Shannon Green and Anika Haugen also needed an extra set to capture a 5-7, 6-1, (10-8) third doubles victory over Katie Woodward and Ya Schmidt to cap the Cardinals’ points.

Ava Thiewes and Josie Harris rallied to win a 2-6, 6-2, (10-6) decision over Ellie Hernes and Libby Totzke at No. 2 doubles, while Ella Schmidt garnered SWC’s second point by posting a 6-2, 6-1 win over Emily Hagen during fourth singles action.

Fairmont tested Mound Westonka’s mettle, garnering two doubles matches and one singles contest to just fall short in the 4-3 dual meet with the White Hawks.

Joseph outslugged Mound Westonka’s No. 2 singles netter Kate Velander, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, while the second doubles tandem of Ellie Hernes and Emily Hagen, along with No. 3 doubles players Libby Totzke and Shannon Green, also contributed winning performances.

Hernes and Hagen fended off the White Hawks’ Grace Peterson and Kali Wirth via a third-set supertiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, (10-4), while the Cardinals’ Libby Totzke and Shannon Green served a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Claire Russick and Ellerie Anderson.

Mound Westonka’s Lily Hames and Grace Prcnal fended off Lauren Davis and Maggy Totzke at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), while Sara Funderburk traded hard shots with Lauren Green en route to a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) third-set victory for the White Hawks.

Alex Welty pocketed back-to-back 6-1 set wins over Fairmont’s Nemmers at first singles, while Mound Westonka’s Savannah Paul bested Senf at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-2.
