Becker powers Cardinals girls soccer to OT win

WASECA — Fairmont Area striker Joni Becker produced a hat trick, including delivering the game-winning goal in overtime, during an early pivotal Big South Conference soccer clash Tuesday night in Waseca.

With the league contest knotted at 3-all, Joni Becker took a pass from Rayah Quiring and buried her blast into the twine at the 4:17 mark of the second 5-minute overtime period to propel the Cardinals to a 4-3 triumph over the hometown Bluejays.

Fairmont Area displayed its tenacity by erasing a 3-1 deficit in regulation to force the extended segment.

Trailing by two on the heels of Bluejays midfielder Cameron Miller’s goal at the 32:52 juncture of the second half, Joni Becker and Lexi Kaufman triggered the Cardinals’ cardiac comeback less than a minute later.

Kaufman delivered the assist to Becker, who collected her second goal of the game at the 31:56 mark to whittle Fairmont Area’s deficit to one.

Striker Emma Schultze then produced another clutch goal — unassisted — to tie the conference contest with 5:03 remaining in regulation.

Waseca pounced to an early 1-0 lead on Gabrielle Rodriguez’s goal at the 33:38 mark before Joni Becker answered at the 30:44 juncture. Brooklyn Meyer spotted Becker with a pass and the Cardinal senior netted the tying goal.

Rodriguez tallied her second score of the night with 2:49 remaining before halftime to send Waseca into intermission with the 2-1 lead.

Cadence Becker turned away 14 of 17 shots faced to garner the victory for Fairmont Area between the pipes.

Waseca goaltender Erica Herron tallied a game-high 19 saves in facing 23 Cardinal shots on goal.

Fairmont Area (4-1, 3-1 BSC) travels to Southwest Minnesota State University on Thursday for a 7:15 p.m. game against Marshall.

Waseca defeated Fairmont Area in junior varsity action, 4-1, Tuesday.

Selma Bleess accounted for the Cardinals’ only goal off an assist from Anna Utermarck.

Abby Cihoski and Angel Smith combined to handle Fairmont Area’s goaltending duties.

Karissa Newville collected one goal and one assist to help Fairmont Area pocket a 4-0 triumph over Waseca during C-squad action Tuesday.

Netkeeper Madi Stromberg recorded 10 saves to earn the shutout for the Cardinals.

Kelsey Hunter triggered Fairmont Area’s offensive output by scoring off a Hope Kueker assist before Newville tallied an unassisted goal.

Elayna Anderson chipped in a Cardinal goal off a pass from Newville before Kennedy Baarts capped the point production with a goal via an Alex Martin assist.
