Fairmont tennis sweeps season-opening triangular

MINNEAPOLIS — The Fairmont Cardinals girls tennis lineup opened the season by sweeping both ends of a triangular Friday at the Inner City Tennis Center.

Claire Nemmers, Briana Joseph and Lauren Green each compiled 2-0 records in singles action to highlight the Cardinals’ winning ways in Minneapolis.

Fairmont produced straight-set victories in both singles and doubles to net a 7-0 triumph over Monticello, and garnered three of four singles matches to pace a 4-2 time-limited decision over Osseo.

Nemmers generated a 6-3, 6-0 win over Monticello’s Emma Blackstone at the No. 1 position in the singles lineup, while Joseph coasted to a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Hannah Mayer at the No. 2 singles spot.

Maggy Totzke needed just two games over the minimum to card a 6-2, 6-0 third singles win over Monticello’s Alayna Jones, while Lauren Green bested Maddie Bjellos, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 4 position to complete the Cardinals’ singles sweep.

Bergen Senf and Lauren Davis posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Kallie Christianson and Jewel Gilman at first doubles, while Fairmont teammates Ellie Hernes and Emily Hagen flip-flopped the set scores in their second doubles win — 6-0, 6-4 — over Monticello’s Sam Pullen and Rebecca Rousslang.

Fairmont’s Shannon Green and Libby Totzke capped the team triumph by outslugging Bailey Hoffmann and Tessa Turner at third doubles, 7-5, 6-3.

Nemmers, Joseph and Lauren Green spearheaded Fairmont’s win over Osseo by winning straight-set singles decisions.

Nemmers served a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Rachel Zeltinger at the No. 1 spot in the bracket, Joseph downed Rachel Erickson in second singles play, 6-1, 6-2, while Lauren Green defeated Hana Johnson at third singles, 6-4, 6-2.

Abi Peyman and Anika Haugen generated Fairmont’s lone winning point in the doubles division by outlasting Greta Kitelinger and Kaitlynne Schulte at the No. 3 position, 1-6, 6-4, (10-8).

Senf and Osseo’s Abby Kettlewell played to a split decision at fourth singles due to a time limit on the Inner City courts. Kettlewell captured the opening set, 6-0, before Senf bounced back to net a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5).

Osseo’s Jessica Dahl and Chloe Lewis outslugged Maggy Totzke and Davis at No. 1 doubles, 5-7, 6-2, (10-3), while the Orioles’ second doubles tandem of Tori Askwith and Sydney Masteller defeated Hernes and Emily Hagen, 6-3, 6-1.

Fairmont (2-0) travels to Mapleton on Tuesday for a 10 a.m. dual meet with Maple River.
