Fairmont 14U girls softball team qualifies for nationals

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont 14U girls softball team rallied for a pair of comeback wins Saturday to capture the St. James Area tournament.

By winning the tournament championship, Fairmont qualified for the Northern Nationals later this summer.

Ahead 5-4 in a back-and-forth finale, Ashley Muller delivered a clutch two-run single with two outs during Fairmont’s final at-bat to add insurance runs to the team’s eventual 7-4 win over host St. James Area.

Nevaeh Rahm produced a triple and Kynlie Anderson doubled for Fairmont during the championship contest.

Mandy Pytleski faced a bases-loaded, no-outs situation in the third inning and escaped without allowing a run. Pytleski did not allow a hit, struck out one and walked one in two innings of relief to net the win.

Fairmont opened the three-round event by scoring four runs in its last at-bat to transform a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 victory over Kasson-Mantorville.

Allison Janssen, Emily Muller and Rahm each delivered doubles in Game 1, while Ashley Muller and Ava Terfehr chipped in singles.

Pytleski recorded a game-best 10 strikeouts, walked six and allowed two runs on just one hit in five frames pitched to earn the complete-game win.

Chantel Moeller collected three hits, including a double, to help Fairmont overpower Jackson County Central in the semifinals, 21-3, in four innings.

Anderson contributed two hits to the win, Terfehr tripled, while Rahm and Emily Muller each doubled.

Janssen allowed three runs on four hits, struck out three and did not issue a walk in three innings of work to earn the win for Fairmont.
