Martins outslug Bulls, 9-7

JACKSON — Spencer Chirpich produced a game-high five hits, including a pivotal RBI double in the top of the ninth inning, to help guide the Fairmont Martins to a 9-7 victory over the Jackson Bulls during Sunday afternoon amateur baseball action at Wacker Field.

Knotted at 7-all after eight completed innings, Jon Traetow walked, stole second base, advanced 90 more feet on Blake Crawmer’s bunt hit and scored the go-ahead run via a throwing error on Crawmer’s steal of second.

Chirpich then delivered the Martins’ second run of the top of the ninth inning by doubling home Crawmer for a two-run edge.

Fairmont closer Adam Schmidt then held Jackson scoreless during the bottom of the ninth to seal his own pitching victory. Schmidt worked three shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit, striking out one and issuing only one walk.

Levi Becker contributed three hits to the Martins’ offensive attack, including a double, to generate two RBIs and scored a pair of runs.

Crawmer doubled and singled, while Fairmont teammates Lance Becker and Tyler Tennyson each supplied two hits.

Schmidt chipped in an RBI single, while Ethan Hurn, Christian Petschke and Traetow each collected one hit for the Martins.

Fairmont (11-2 overall, 10-2 First Nite) plays host to Adrian at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.
