Webers power MCW golfers to Valley crown

FREEBORN — The Martin County West Mavericks claimed the Valley Conference boys golf tournament championship on Wednesday at Oakview Golf Course in Freeborn.

The Mavericks garnered a six-stroke win over St. Clair/Loyola with a total of 352 to the Cyclones’ 358. The Madelia Blackhawks placed third with a total of 378.

Mitchell Weber led the Mavericks when he carded a 43-41-84 on the strength of eight pars and a birdie on the 13th hole, while MCW teammate Dawson Weber was close behind with a 43-42-85 on eight pars.

Hunter Schmidt shot a 46-45-91 on four pars and Carson Kahler carded a 45-47-92 on six pars and a birdie on the 16th hole for the final Mavericks’ counting scores.

All four of the MCW counting scores were good enough to receive all-conference honors.

Nic Miller notched a 56-54-110 with one par, while Evan Roben hit a 63-59-122 to round out the Mavericks’ effort.

Colin Wihlm hit two birdies and four pars to lead the Blackhawks with a 43-47-90, while Carson Wihlm knocked in three par putts and a birdie on the 14th hole for a 48-45-93.

Cade Lunz carded a 47-48-95 with two pars and Colby Wihlm hit a 49-51-100 with a par and a birdie for the final Madelia counting scores.

Collin Tierney’s 50-53-103 on one par and Jared Henry’s 50-54-104 on three pars rounded out the Blackhawks’ scoring.

Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther received an incomplete score.

Mitchell Steuber led the Jaguars with a 54-50-104, Wyatt Risk totalled a 53-52-105 and Colby Brudelie hit a 58-65-123.

St. Clair/Loyola’s Noah Roe won medalist honors with a round of 43-40-83, while Mitchell Weber’s 84 claimed second place.

Martin County West, Madelia and the Jaguar boys wait until Thursday, May 30, to play Day 1 of the Section 2A tournament at North Links Golf Course in North Mankato.

Valley Conference Tournament (Girls) — The Madelia Blackhawks placed third, while the Martin County West finished fifth at the Valley Conference golf tournament Wednesday at Oakview Golf Course in Freeborn.

Alden-Conger won the tournament championship with a combined score of 463, while Madelia finished at 478 and MCW hit 533.

Alayna Champlin led the Blackhawk girls with her score of 51-54-105 on one par, while Faith Bergeman totalled 57-64-121 on one par.

Jude Frelich hit 58-67-125 and Savannah Wyman carded a 68-59-127 for the final Blackhawk counting scores.

Hannah Grebenc totaled 67-61-128 and Taylor Tierney hit 79-66-145 to round out the Blackhawks’ scoring.

Leah Amborn’s 58-59-117 led the Maverick girls, while Katelyn Lyon hit a 61-57-118.

Natalie Smith totalled a 66-69-135 and Macey Becker notched a 78-85-163 for the final Maverick counting scores.

Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther received an incomplete score.

Amber Steen was the lone Jaguar girl to tee off, shooting 64-68-132.

Champlin’s 105, Amborn’s 117 and Lyon’s 118 were enough for all-conference honors, while Bergeman’s 121, Frelich’s 125, Wyman’s 127, Grebenc’s 128 and Steen’s 132 reached all-conference honorable mention.

Madelia, Martin County West and the Jaguars all hit the greens at 10 a.m. Tuesday for the Section 2A Meet at North Links Golf course in North Mankato.
