Ramblers knock off Cardinal tennis team

WINONA — The Cotter Ramblers swept the singles bracket to pace a 6-1 non-league boys tennis triumph over the Fairmont Cardinals on Friday.

Fairmont’s third doubles combination of Jack Hagen and Ian Fortune prevented a shutout by outlasting Hunter Ramsden and Aidan Carlson.

Ramsden and Carlson posted a 6-2 opening-set win before Hagen and Fortune squeezed out a 7-6 (7-5) win in a second-set tiebreaker. Fairmont’s duo prevailed with a 6-4 third-set score.

Fairmont’s Jeb Green and Pete Ortega opened with a 6-4 first-set win over Joey Renk and Rob Besek before Cotter’s No. 1 tandem eked out a 7-6 (8-6) second-set win. Renk and Besek outslugged Green and Ortega in the third set, 7-5.

Matt Besek and Peter Badciong prevailed over the Cardinals’ Evan Carlson and Aaron Hendricks at No. 2 doubles. Besek and Badciong won the opener, 6-2, before Carlson and Hendricks answered with a 6-0 second-set victory. Besek and Badciong regrouped to post a 6-1 third-set decision.

Fairmont’s Thomas Klanderud outdueled Jon Besek in their fourth singles’ first set, 6-4, before Besek flip-flopped the score in the second set. Besek then won the third set, 6-3.

Tony Wan netted back-to-back 6-1 set wins over Tyrell Zieske at first singles, Jerry Yang downed Ameya Komaragiri at second singles by a 6-2, 6-1 decision, while Ian Modjeski served a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Blake Haugen at the No. 3 spot in the bracket.

Fairmont (6-8) plays host to Schaeffer Academy at 4:30 p.m. today.
