St. Clair boys pocket 4th straight Sentinel Relays crown

FAIRMONT — The St. Clair Cyclones claimed their fourth consecutive Class A victory at the Sentinel Relays on Friday at Bob Bonk track in Fairmont.

St. Clair put up an excellent 184 points on 11 golds, three silvers and five bronze finishes, while second-place Martin County West scored 106 with 2 golds, 3 silvers and 5 bronze finishes. Fourth-place Fairmont junior varsity put up 95 and sixth-place North Union scored 55.

North Union’s Ryan Lang took second in the open 100 in 12.2, while the Warriors’ 4×200 relay team of Jarnu Sanger, Brendan Anderson, Lang and Aiden Fries took second in 1:39.32 and the MCW team of Nick Potthoff, Derrek Russenberger, Nick Beseke and Joseph Forsberg claimed third at 1:40.16.

MCW’s Kolton Larson won by less than a step in the 1,600 after coming back from 20 yards back in the final lap to finish at 4:53.2, with St. Clair’s Chase Baker finishing at 4:53.29 for second.

Fairmont’s Justin Olson claimed third in the open 400 with a time of 59.3, while MCW’s Potthoff took bronze in the 300-meter hurdles at 45.95.

The Fairmont junior varsity medley relay team of Cesar Flores, Kaleb Petschke, Tony Ortega and Matthew Anderson finished third in 4:18.85, while NU’s Anderson took silver in the 200-meter dash at 23.8.

Jake Lewis earned 10 points for MCW when he finished first in the 3,200-meter run at 10:43.05, while Zane Borchardt claimed six more with his third-place finish of 11:20.79.

The Warriors’ 4×100 relay squad of Sanger, Anderson, Lange and Fries took second in 47.96, just behind St. Clair’s gold-medal finish of 47.72.

MCW’s 4×400 relay team of Russenberger, Beseke, Forsberg and Larson finished the meet strong with a second-place finish in 3:45.42, while the Fairmont junior varsty team of Nuss, Flores, Sanchez and Gatewood took third in 3:59.36.

In the field events, MCW’s Nick Johnson took second in the shot put with a throw of 40-2.5, while Fairmont’s Caleb Johnson landed third at 39-4.5.

The Mavericks’ Larson finished third in the discus with a heave of 98-8, while Fairmont’s Caden Baarts took second in the pole vault when he cleared the 9-3 bar.

The Mavericks enter the starting blocks again at 3 p.m. Monday when they travel to Maple River, while North Union hits the track at the Top of Iowa Conference Meet at 4 p.m. Monday.
