Fairmont tennis posts 1-2 record during 2-day span

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinal boys tennis team compiled a 1-2 record during a two-day span on the road.

Fairmont swept the doubles bracket to pace a 6-1 victory over the Stewartville Tigers on Friday in Stewartville.

Jeb Green and Pete Ortega combined court skills at No. 1 doubles to post back-to-back 6-2 set wins over Jack Parry and Patrick Miller before Cardinal teammates Evan Carlson and Aaron Hendricks coasted to a 6-0, 6-2 decision over David Wilson and Justin Beach at the No. 2 spot in the bracket.

Stuart Smick and Jack Hagen completed Fairmont’s doubles sweep by outlasting Nathan Edholm and Noah Vandeloo, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 3 position.

Ameya Komaragiri netted back-to-back 6-3 set victories over Ethan Olerich at second singles for the Cardinals, while Blake Haugen fended off William Mueller at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, 6-4, 6-3.

Thomas Klanderud produced back-to-back 6-1, 6-1 set wins over Colton Zimmerman at fourth singles for Fairmont, while Ethan Humble generated Stewartville’s only point via a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Tyrell Zieske at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.

Host St. Michael-Albertville pocketed three of the four singles matches to help pace a 5-2 decision over Fairmont on Saturday in St. Michael.

Klanderud collected the Cardinals’ only singles points against the Knights, while Carlson and Hendricks contributed Fairmont’s doubles tally.

Klanderud outslugged Corbin Szymanski at the No. 4 spot in the bracket, 7-5, 6-0, while Carlson and Hendricks rallied to outlast Eric Gao and Trent O’Neil, 3-6, 7-5, (10-8), at the No. 2 position.

SMA’s Jack LaZella and Gabe Hjelle outpointed Smick and Hagen at third doubles by rallying for a 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, (12-10) victory, while the Knights’ Noah Anderson and Patrick O’Sullivan dealt back-to-back 6-4 set losses to the Cardinals’ Green and Ortega at first doubles.

SMA’s Owen Lindstrom chalked up a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Zieske at first singles, Ezra Dickerson glided by Komaragiri at second singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Leyton Punton fended off Fairmont’s Blake Haugen at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-3.

Centennial captured all three three-set matches to help engineer a 7-0 triumph over Fairmont on Saturday in St. Michael.

Joaquin Bliss downed Komaragiri at second singles, 6-4, 3-6, (11-9), while Centennial teammate Justin Bailey outdistanced Green at third singles, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), (11-9).

Connor Johnson and Parry Paraschou capped Centennial’s three-set match winning streak by outdueling Carlson and Hendricks at No. 2 doubles, 4-6, 6-1, (10-6).

Nate Zola and Dane Stensland netted back-to-back 6-2 set wins over Klanderud and Haugen at first doubles, while Knight teammates Zack Chattey and Jesse Simso served a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Smick and Hagen at third doubles.

Jack Simso bested Zieske during first singles action, 6-3, 6-1, while Sean Oslund collected another SMA point by defeating Ortega at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4.

Fairmont (4-7) travels to Pipestone today.
