St. James tennis edges Fairmont, 4-3

ST. JAMES — St. James Area swept the singles bracket to give the Saints four team points and the meet, while the Fairmont Cardinals swept the doubles during a 4-3 Big South Conference boys tennis meet in St. James on Tuesday.

The Cardinals’ first doubles combo of Jeb Green and Pete Ortega took a 6-4, 7-5, win against Josue Solorzano and Sawyer Evans to give the Cardinals a point, while the second doubles tandem of Evan Carlson and Aaron Hendricks came back from losing their first set, 6-3, to reverse their fortunes and win the second set, 6-3, to force a tiebreaker. The Cardinals’ duo took the tiebreaker 10-3 against Luis Almendariz and Anthony Almendariz.

Fairmont’s third doubles crew of Stuart Smick and Jack Hagen beat St. James’ James Gutierrez and Caleb Rivera, 6-2, 6-4, to complete the doubles sweep.

The Saints’ Lucas Doll beat Tyrell Zieske, 6-1, 6-2, to give the Saints the first-singles point, while St. James’ Ben Foss took down Ameya Komaragiri, 6-3, 6-2, at second doubles.

Trey Witcraft earned the Saints a team point at third singles when he beat Blake Haugen, 6-3, 6-2, then Landon Hoppe completed the Saints’ singles sweep with a win over Thomas Klanderud, 6-0, 6-1.

Fairmont (1-3) plays host to New Ulm at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cardinal Courts.

Worthington 5, Blue Earth Area 2 — The Trojans swept the singles and took a doubles point to take down the Bucs in a Big South Conference meet at Hal Schroeder Courts Tuesday in Blue Earth.

BEA’s first doubles tandem of Parker Kienitz and Nick Frundt earned one of the Bucs’ two team points when they came back from a 6-3 first-set loss to take the second set 6-1 and force a third-set tiebreaker against Ryan Newman and Ben Lopez. Kienitz and Fundt took the tiebreaker 7-3 to claim the match.

The Bucs’ James Greer and Jonathan Hill brought the Bucs their other team point with a, 6-1, 6-3, win over Colby Hastings and bobby Souwankham at second doubles.

The Trojans’ Blaine Doeden defeated Jack Frundt, 6-3, 6-0, to take the first-singles point for Worthington, while Sullivan Merrigan beat Jack Barke, 6-1, 6-0, for the second singles point.

Worthington’s Kipton Jenson took down Vern Johnson at third singles, 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, while Cade Lindner completed the singles sweep with a, 6-0, 6-2, win over Jaime Johnson and fourth singles.

The Trojans’ third doubles pair of Michael Schneider and alec Langerud beat Max Loge and Joe Frundt, 6-4, 6-3, to take a fifth team point for Worthington.

Blue Earth Area plays host to Waseca at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
