MSU’s Shumski earns NSIC accolades

MANKATO — Minnesota State University, Mankato sophomore forward Rachel Shumski was selected as the NSIC South Division Player of the Week for her performances in the Mavericks’ 98-46 win over Bethany Lutheran and an 83-60 triumph over Concordia-St. Paul.

The 6-foot former Granada-Huntley-East Chain athletic standout topped the Mavericks’ victory over Concordia-St. Paul with a double-double effort of 15 points and 11 rebounds to complement three blocked shots.

Shumski made 5 of 8 field goals and 4 of 4 free throws in producing 14 points during the Mavericks’ rout over Bethany Lutheran.

Shumski and MSU (4-1) travel to Marshall on Friday to face Southwest Minnesota State University in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

Squirt ‘B’ nets two more wins

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Squirt ‘B’ hockey team erupted for a combined 34 goals, including six hat tricks, to pocket both ends of Sunday’s split doubleheader on the road.

Lucas Roiger and Gavin Kester each produced a game-best four goals to help power Fairmont’s 20-0 rout over Luverne at Blue Mound Ice Arena.

Caleb Meyer collected three goals and two assists, Preston Cepress netted three goals, while Klay Beemer doled out four assists to complement two goals for Fairmont.

Logan Madsen and Brandon Hector each chipped in two goals and an assist in the win, while Noah Meixell distributed three helpers.

Goalie Tanner Pankow recorded two saves to net the shutout for Fairmont, which unleashed 47 shots on goal.

Beemer blistered the Boji Bay Arena’s nets with seven goals to steamroll Fairmont to a 14-2 triumph over the Okobjoi Blizzards on Sunday night.

Kester contributed three goals and one assist to the winning effort, Cepress generated one goal and two assists, while Madsen, Roiger and Jase Meade each tallied one goal.

Pankow turned away 11 shots on net to claim the win for Fairmont, which unleashed 57 shots on goal.

Fairmont Squirt ‘B’ (7-0-0) travels to Sleepy Eye on Saturday for a 12:45 p.m. game against New Ulm/ Sleepy Eye.

PeeWees coast by Windom, 9-3

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont PeeWee hockey team defeated Windom, 9-3, Sunday night at Martin County Arena.

Brock Lutterman produced four goals and four assists to spearhead Fairmont’s offensive output, while teammate Hank Artz collected three goals and one assist.

Luke Kester and Tyson Pankow each netted a goal for Fairmont, with Kester, Jace Teveldal, Mathew Cone and Connor Gronewald each distributing one assist during the victory.

Goalie Ethan Geerdes made 24 saves to net the win for Fairmont, which travels to LaCrosse, Wis., to compete in the Chill Classic tournament this weekend.
