Pierson, Sagedahls pace Fairmont Summer Run

FAIRMONT — Lukas Pierson fine-tuned his long-distance running skills for his first year of college, while Penn Sagedahl perfected his stride in preparing for his final prep cross country season during Saturday’s 40th annual Fairmont Summer Run.

Pierson, a Butterfield native, and Penn Sagedahl of Minnetonka captured top overall honors in the 5-mile and 2-mile runs, respectively, by establishing records in their age divisions.

Penn Sagedahl crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, 19 seconds to eclipse former Martin County West standout Jonah Mayo’s previous mark for the 16-19-year-old bracket of 10:35, set in 2014.

Pierson covered the 5-mile course that started and ended on Bob Bonk Track in a time of 27:04 to erase Connor Eastman’s prior 18 & under record of 28:29, set in 2012.

“This is a nice tune-up in getting ready to run cross country this fall at South Dakota State,” said Pierson, who captured 16th place overall in the 2017 Class A state cross country meet by running a 5K time of 16:33.1 to guide St. James Area to runner-up state accolades. “I’ll also run long distance during the indoor track season this winter, and then during the outdoor track season in the spring.”

Penn Sagedahl, who will serve as one of the captains on the Hopkins High School cross country lineup this fall, also used Saturday’s 2-mile run to test his skills against a number of talented harriers in the southern Minnesota prep ranks.

“When I was talking to him before the race, Penn said he wanted to run under 10 (minutes) today. That’s fast,” said Fairmont senior-to-be Andrew Moeller, who captured third place overall in the 2-mile run with a stellar time of 11:20 to finish behind Martin County West standout Kolton Larson’s runner-up showing of 11:04.

Ironically, Joel Sagedahl, Penn’s father, broke his own age division record by finishing fourth overall in the 2-mile run with a time of 11:51. Joel Sagedahl set the Summer Run’s 40-49 division’s mark of 11:57 only a year ago.

Sherwood Sagedahl won the 70-years-plus male crown in the 2-mile run by posting a time of 14:42 to place 23rd overall, while Siri Sagedahl garnered 29th overall by crossing the finish line in 16:35. Sherwood Sagedahl is the father of Joel and grandfather of both Penn and Siri.

What’s the secret behind the Fairmont 79-years-young runner’s success?

“I only wear these shoes during competitive races,” Sherwood said in reference to his gold Nike Mayfly Lites. “They are super lightweight and comfortable. When I bought them years ago, they were advertised as, ‘good for 60 miles.'”

“I’m happy to have kept up with a runner of his caliber,” Katie Hanson, who placed 22nd overall in the 2-mile run, said in reference to the No. 1-ranked Masters Senior Track & Field pentathlon for his age bracket.

Hanson posted a time of 14:36 to net second in the 30-39 female division behind Hadassah Peters, who captured 16th overall in 13:45. Peters finished second among female runners overall in the 2-mile event behind current Fairmont High School runner Laura Thompson, who placed 15th overall in 13:35.

In a battle of prep mentors in the 5-mile competition, North Union head cross country coach Brooke Nelsen posted the top female time of 33:27 to place sixth overall, while Fairmont assistant cross country coach Holly Neusch was second among women by crossing the finish line eighth overall in 36:07.

Pierson displayed his mettle by fending off two current high school runners in the 5-mile race. Blue Earth Area’s Grant Strukel captured runner-up honors behind Pierson in a time of 29:41 for second overall.

Fairmont prepster William Saari captured third overall with a time of 32:01.

Kellen Rodriguez, a 2018 Fairmont High School graduate, and former Cardinal runner Dan Bonk rounded out the 5-mile run’s top five overall finishes with respective times of 32:57 and 33:00.

Dayton Draper and Cooper Gudahl earned a 1-2 finish in the half-mile run in 3:11 and 3:14, respectively, while Kennedy Becker set a Summer Run 11 & under female record for placing first in her division and third overall in 3:15.

Carter Hanson fended off Noah Boro to win the quarter-mile run, 1:20-1:30. Carter Hanson’s time also set a record for the 8-9 male division.
