Fairmont dominates relays at indoor quadrangular
MANKATO — The Fairmont Cardinals track & field teams established one school record and won seven of the eight relay races during a season-opening indoor quadrangular on Friday night at Minnesota State University in Mankato.
Fairmont’s Devin Johnson posted three individual victories and the Cardinals boys lineup swept all four relays, while Allison Lardy set an indoor throwing mark and the Fairmont girls team captured three of the four relays to headline the non-scored four-team event.
Lardy heaved the shot to a first-place mark of 39 feet, 5 1/2 inches to etch her name into the red-and-white’s indoor field events record book.
Joni Becker and Lizzy Subbert also generated first-place individual showings for the Cardinals, with Becker also running legs on two of the program’s first-place relay baton squads.
Subbert edged Blue Earth Area’s Melissa Hagedorn for the 60-meter high hurdles crown, with both hurdlers recording 10.2-second times. Hagedorn also claimed runner-up accolades in the 60-meter low hurdles with a time of 10.5.
Becker joined forces with Megan Hawkins, Emma Koehler and Lexi Kaufman to net the medley relay crown in 4:48.3. Becker also anchored the Cardinals’ first-place 4×400 team’s time of 4:28.6. Grace Higgins, who placed second in the 60-meter dash (8.3), ran the leadoff leg of the 4×4, followed by Kaufman, Brooke Hunwardsen and Becker.
Higgins anchored Fairmont’s winning 4×200 relay combination of Jenna Gustafson, Savanah Baker and Hunwardsen’s top time of 1:56.7.
Baker also garnered second place in the long jump by clearing 14-4 1/4, while Becker struck gold in the open 400 in 1:06.
Maddi Oelke sprayed the sand in the triple jump pit at 32-0 1/4 to produce Blue Earth Area’s lone individual victory during the quadrangular.
Blue Earth Area’s Lindsey Norman cleared 36-1 1/2 to place second to Lardy in the shot put, Buc teammate Nicole Lium netted runner-up honors in the pole vault at 9-6, while BEA’s Amanda Jacobson posted a time of 1:08 to place second to Becker in the open 400.
In the boys competition, Fairmont’s Devin Johnson swept the 60-meter high hurdles (9.3) and 60-meter intermediate hurdles (9.1), while also winning the triple jump with a leap of 38-5 1/2.
Johnson led the Cardinals’ 1-2-3 showing in the high hurdles as Lucas Simpson (9.3) and Chris Lebert (9.5) netted second and third, respectively. Lebert also placed second in the intermediates in 9.4.
Seth Carlmark posted a time of 7.4 to capture top honors in the 60-meter dash for Fairmont before running legs on two of the Cardinals’ four winning relays.
Dayton Pasch, Carlmark, Kaleb Hoye and Dominick Ortiz traded handoffs to a winning time of 1:42.9 in the 4×200, while Carlmark, Pasch, Andrew Moeller and Dylan Kennedy combined forces to pocket first place in the 4×400 in 3:43.0.
