Luverne tennis fends off Fairmont; BEA nets victory

LUVERNE — The Luverne Cardinals defeated the Fairmont Cardinals, 5-2, during Big South Conference dual-meet tennis action on Tuesday.

Claire Nemmers and Maggy Totzke won their respective singles matches for Fairmont. Nemmers took a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Carissa Cunningham at the second singles spot, while Maggy Totzke topped Luverne’s No. 4 netter Ainslie Robinson, 6-1, 6-4.

At the No. 1 singles position, Luverne’s Sam Pierce won a three-setter over Sydney Hainy. Hainy won the first set 6-2, but Pierce won the final two sets, 6-2 and 6-4.

Luverne’s Joci Oye beat Briana Joseph, 6-2, 6-1, at the third singles position.

In doubles play, Emilie Bartels and Riley Severtson combined for a 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 win over Brittany Bass and Bergen Senf at No. 1 doubles for Luverne. Elise Jarchow and Roz Oye took a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Fairmont’s No. 2 doubles players Makena Rodriguez and Lauren Green.

Lauren VerSteeg and Mela Jarchow beat Holly Petrowiak and Lauren Davis, 6-0, 6-2 to complete Luverne’s doubles sweep.

Fairmont (1-7) plays host to Albert Lea at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Blue Earth Area 6, Pipestone 1 — The Bucs held the Arrows to one match win for the Big South Conference dual-meet victory on Tuesday in Luverne.

Carmen Skyberg and Adrianna Johnson produced the Arrows’ lone win at the second doubles spot, beating McKenna Dutton and Britt Howard, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4.

At No. 1 singles, Macie Stevermer beat Paige Ahrendt, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Julia Hanson then took a 6-2, 6-0 win against Lauren Lapthorn at second singles.

Blue Earth Area’s Arika Howard beat Hannah Berg, 6-4, 6-2, at third singles, while Buc teammate Tea Armstrong won consecutive 6-0 sets against Gianna Njau at the No. 4 singles spot.

Blue Earth Area’s No. 1 doubles partners Malarie Scholtes and Carissa Engesser won a 6-4, 7-5 match against Paige Morgan and Aspen Schelhaas.

The Bucs’ Sydney Blagg and Cali Beyer teamed at third doubles to take a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Maciah Lorang and Tricia Nissen.

Blue Earth Area (6-1) hosts Maple River at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth.
