Cardinal Power fastpitch 9th at NAFA nationals

FAIRMONT — The Cardinal Power 16U girls fastpitch softball lineup compiled a 4-4 record to generate a ninth-place tie at last week’s North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) Nationals in Shoreview.

Illinois Gold squeezed by Cardinal Power, 5-3, via the international runner rule during an extra-inning opening-round clash.

Ana Krause, Cambrie Anderson, Sydney Hainy, Jaiden Leiding and Hailey Meyers each produced one hit apiece to top the Fairmont-based team in the first round.

Cardinal Power pitcher Kaitlyn Freese allowed two earned runs on 10 hits, struck out three and walked one in pitching the distance.

Sleepy Eye, the eventual fifth-place finisher at nationals, posted a 12-3 second-round win over Cardinal Power.

Lexus Wojtanowicz, Lizzie Oothoudt, Madison Moeller, Krause, Hainy and Leiding each delivered hits for Cardinal Power.

Jen Moeller allowed only four runs on 10 hits, notched 10 strikeouts and walked four in going the distance inside the pitcher’s circle.

The Fairmont-based team erupted for three first-inning runs to trigger a 7-3 third-round victory over the Hopkins Royals. Krause, Wojtanowicz and Anderson smacked two hits apiece.

Jen Moeller gave up just one earned run on five hits, fanned one and issued three walks in hurling the complete game.

Cardinal Power bounced back from an early 3-1 deficit to net a 6-5 comeback triumph over the Moorhead Crush during Round 4 action.

Krause produced a pair of hits, while Wojtanowicz, Hainy, Meyers and Jen Moeller each tallied one hit each.

Freese recorded 10 strikeouts and did not issue a walk, while allowing three earned runs on 10 hits to earn the complete-game win.

Southwest Wisconsin Shock, who eventually captured third at nationals, posted a 5-1 fifth-round win over Cardinal Power.

Alex Schuder, Wojtanowicz, Oothoudt and Hainy each drilled hits to pace Fairmont’s offense, while Freese allowed one earned run on nine hits, fanned one and walked one in pitching the distance.

Wojtanowicz lined a leadoff double before scoring the winning run on Oothoudt’s game-winning walkoff RBI single to pace Cardinal Power’s 3-2 victory over the Mankato Peppers during Round 6 action.

Wojtanowicz collected two hits on the game, while Oothoudt, Schuder, Krause, Anderson and Meyers each supplied one hit for the victors.

Jen Moeller allowed just one earned run on six hits, struck out four and issued three walks in going the distance to net the win.

Oothoudt’s two hits and three RBIs helped engineer Cardinal Power’s 7-4 seventh-round triumph over Monticello.

Whitney Scott and Schuder each contributed two hits to the Fairmont-based lineup’s winning ways.

Freese notched the complete-game win by allowing only one earned run on six hits, while striking out three and not issuing a walk.

Lake of the Hills of Illinois outslugged Cardinal Power in Game 8 of the national tourney, 9-6.

Meyers paced Cardinal Power’s offensive effort with three hits, while Scott, Krause and Anderson contributed two hits apiece.

Freese gave up six runs on seven hits in three innings pitched, while Jen Moeller allowed three hits in three shutout innings of relief.

Meyers produced a .500 batting average to top Cardinal Power during the eight-game span, while Scott and Wojtanowicz belted deliveries at a .455 and a .409 pace, respectively.

Oothoudt collected a team-best seven RBIs during the nationals, while Krause, Anderson and Meyers drove in four runs each.

Krause and Anderson topped the Fairmont-based team with six and five runs scored, respectively.

Freese recorded 12 strikeouts and a 3.63 ERA in 27 innings pitched during the eight-game span for Cardinal Power.

Jen Moeller notched 15 strikeouts and compiled a 2.21 ERA in 19 innings pitched.
