Red Bulls advance 4 to state wrestling meet

REDWOOD FALLS — For Jaxson Rohman, Zac Ringnell and Collin Steuber, a trip to the Class AA state individual wrestling tournament isn’t new, but certainly deserving.

The Red Bulls’ trio won their respective weight classes during Day 2 of the Section 3AA individual meet. Fairmont/Martin County West teammate Payton Anderson, who placed second at 132, will join them Friday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. This will be Anderson’s first time at state.

“It’s great. He’s earned it and worked hard for it,” Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson said about Anderson.

Anderson posted five first-period points en route to a 9-0 semifinal win over Marshall’s Dylan Dulas to get to the championship round. Starting in the down position in the middle period, Anderson notched two points on a reversal and two more in the final period on a takedown.

Anderson then lost a 4-0 decision to Sean Howk of New Ulm to pocket runner-up honors.

Howk beat Redwood-River Valley’s Tayte Harazin, 5-0, to get the to final match.

Rohman, who’s ranked second at 106, pinned his way to a second consecutive section title. The eighth-grader used a 1:38 fall on Wabasso/Red Rock Central wrestler Mason Irlbeck to get to the finals. In 1:55, Rohman had a takedown before earning the slap of the canvas against Hunter Baker of Luverne.

Baker had pinned Worthington’s Erik Artiga in 3:54 during the semifinals.

No. 10-ranked 126-pounder Ringnell also made good on a fall in the semifinals. Ringnell put Jordan Odegard of Quad County on his back in 2:33. He then narrowly edged New Ulm’s Ryan Wacker in a 3-2 decision to earn the section title.

After a scoreless first period, Ringnell recorded the first point on an escape after starting down. Wacker was able to get a takedown for a 2-1 lead. But Ringnell reversed and held on for the remainder of the match to get the victory.

Wacker doubled Tucker Oeltjenbruns of Luverne, 8-4, in the semifinals before falling to Ringnell.

Collin Steuber earned his third trip to the state meet on the strength of an 11-1 major decision over Quad County’s Miles Kattevold. Ironically, Kattevold marked a 13-0 major decision win against Wabasso/Red Rock Central wrestler Cole Werner in the semifinals.

Steuber, the No. 6-ranked wrestler at 152, moved up to 160 and led Kattesvold 6-0 entering the final period of the championship match. He then reversed on Kattesvold and notched three points on a near fall in the final seconds of the match.

Steuber reached the finals via a 1:56 fall on Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s Nash Mayer.

“Jaxson, Zac and Collin put together really tough tournaments. They stayed consistent,” Williamson said. “I was pleased with all of the guys. We had 10 placers, so it was great to see from all of them.”

Cale Steuber, Jordan Wolter and Mario Maldonado finished third at 113, 120 and 145, respectively, while Red Bulls’ 152-pounder Miles Fitzgerald placed fifth. Nathan Simmonds, Tristan Lange and Conner Tordsen finished sixth at 138, 170 and 182, respectively.

Fulda/Murray County Central’s Danny Blankenship put Cale Steuber on his back in 1:17 in the semifinals. Cale Steuber rebounded with an 8-7 victory over Maverick Goblirsch of Redwood-River Valley to earn the third-place finish.

Wolter and TMB/WWG’s Dereck Ellingson were knotted up at 1 apiece after three periods to force extra time. Ellingson literally escaped with a 2-1 win after breaking Wolter’s grasp during the ultimate tiebreaker period.

Wolter then earned third place by pinning Dawson-Boyd wrestler Trevon Johnson in 42 seconds.

Maldonado used the wrestleback bracket to get a true-second match where he fell, 5-4, to Wabasso/RRC’s Jared Schroepfer. Maldonado opened the wrestlebacks by doubling up Cole Hatch of Quad County, 8-4. He then pinned Redwood-River Valley’s Eric Bommersbach in 3:03 during the third-place match.

Fitzgerald earned a bye in the first round of the wrestlebacks before beating Marshall wrestler Devyn Martzloff, 8-6. Wabasso/RRC’s Cody Dudgeon used a 7-4 decision over Fitzgerald in the next match.

Maldonado won the fifth-place 152-pound match against TMB/WWG Trevor Eisfeld, 12-6.

At 138, Simmonds wrestled his way to a sixth-place finish, starting with a 4-2 win against Ayden Friese of Quad County. Simmonds then lost 5-2 to Anthony Axford of TMB/WWG, and got pinned by Zach Stahl of Marshall in the fifth-place contest.

Lange pocketed a 14-2 major decision over Quad County’s Stephan Countryman in the wrestlebacks. Worthington’s Mason Byrne pinned Lange in 1:13 before Lange took a 2:14 fall to Colton Struxness of Dawson-Boyd.

Tordsen then got pinned by TMB/WWG’s Tyler Timm in 1:45 during the match for fifth place. Tordsen had previously pinned New Ulm’s Hunter Landsteiner in 2:19, but lost via a 7-5 decision to Zack Felcyn of Marshall.
