Jaguars edge Bucs for holiday crown

BLUE EARTH — Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther senior sharpshooter Alexis Brummond did not waste any time in reaching a prep basketball career milestone on Thursday.

Brummond needed six points to reach the 1,000-point mark, and produced the Jaguars’ first seven points against the host Blue Earth Area Bucs during the Blue Earth Area Holiday Classic’s championship clash.

Ironically, Brummond’s second 3-pointer during the early stages served as the catalyst behind the Jaguars’ 17-4 offensive outburst to build a 21-9 lead with 6 minutes remaining in the opening half.

More importantly, Brummond netted six of her team-best 23 points during the 4-minute overtime to propel the Jaguars to a 64-56 victory over the Bucs — the second time this season.

GHEC/Truman/Martin Luther squeezed by Blue Earth Area, 62-57 in overtime, on Dec. 13 in Blue Earth.

“Call that one, ‘How to build an 18-point lead, let the other team tie it up, and then win in overtime,'” Jaguars mentor Rick Uttech said wryly.

After Brummond pocketed one of her co-game-best six steals and hit the ensuing layup for a 50-37 lead, Reegan Howard drilled her third and final 3-pointer to trigger the Bucs’ 14-1 offensive avalanche during the final 4 minutes of regulation to force an extra session.

Caitlin Rorman, who produced a game-high 24 points, converted a one-and-one situation before draining a trifecta off one of Sidney Blair’s three assists to whittle BEA’s deficit to 50-45 with 1:40 remaining.

Sidney Blair’s runner in the lane pulled the Bucs within three before Sidney Blair broke the Jaguars’ full-court press, drove the lane and dished to Sofie Blair for a lay-in with 27 seconds to go.

Brummond sank a solo free throw at the 19-second juncture before Rorman weaved her way through the Jaguars’ defense and banked home the tying basket with nine seconds left.

The 4-minute extra session, however, belonged to GHEC/Truman/Martin Luther.

“Our girls did a nice job of bouncing back during the overtime to put the game away in the first couple of minutes,” said Uttech.

Hanna Geistfeld, who netted 12 points, hit a putback basket to open the overtime before Hannah Johanson connected for a layup off Macy Quinn’s co-game-best sixth steal-turned-assist for a 55-51 lead.

Geistfeld sank a solo charity toss before Brummond pocketed a midcourt theft, drove the distance and angled home a baseline runner for a seven-point margin with 1:49 to go in the extra segment.

Rorman and Sidney Blair combined for all five of the Bucs’ points in overtime only to watch as Quinn and Brummond salted away the win at the free throw line. Quinn made two at the 59-second juncture before Brummond went a perfect 4-for-4 at the stripe during the final 47 seconds.

Brummond added six steals, five rebounds and three assists to her 23-point performance for the Jaguars, while Quinn finished with eight points, seven rebounds, six steals and three assists. Kenlie Pytleski contribute 11 points, a game-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots to the victory, while Johanson dished out four assists to complement six points.

Rorman grabbed five boards to go with her 24-point effort, while Howard supplied 13 points and a co-game-best six steals for the Bucs. Sidney Blair contributed six points, five rebounds and three assists for BEA, while Sofie Blair and Lindsey Norman added five points each. Sofie Blair also doled out four assists.
