Robert J. “Bob” Wallace
FAIRMONT — Robert J. “Bob” Wallace, 83, of Fairmont, Minn., passed away on April 16, 2026, surrounded by family. He was born Oct. 25, 1942, in Albert Lea, Minn. to Bruce and Fran Wallace. Bob grew up in Albert Lea and graduated from high school in 1961. He attended Macalester College in St. Paul, graduating in 1965 and went on to the University of Minnesota to pursue his MBA.
In 1970, he moved to Fairmont, continuing as the third generation to own and operate Bob Wallace Mercantile, later known as Wallace’s Department Store. After the store closed in 1996, his leadership and dedication to the Fairmont business community led him to serve as president of the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce. His commitment and integrity earned him lasting respect among colleagues and the community.
Bob served on numerous committees and boards throughout Fairmont, Martin County, and Southern Minnesota. He was a mentor to many over the years, both professionally and personally. Always on a mission and never without purpose, Bob’s take’charge attitude and vast knowledge made him someone others looked up to. He was deeply respected and left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bob and Catherine enjoyed many years of lake life at McClelland’s Beach on the north shore of Big Spirit in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Following their grandson Braeden’s activities and sporting events brought great pride and joy to Bob. He was blessed as a nine year survivor of AITL lymphoma cancer.
He is survived by his spouse, Catherine Shell; daughter Debra (Matt) Wallace; sons Joel Shell, Ryan (Nichole) Shell, and Adam (Carly) Shell; grandson, Braeden Shell; as well as other extended family and friends.
An opportunity to remember and celebrate Bob will be held at Lakeview Funeral Home on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Bob’s suits are retired, casual dress is encouraged. The family especially thanks the Mayo Lymphoma team including Dr. T (Gita Thanarajasingam) and Emily Brigham, Fairmont Mayo Dr. Durga Komaragiri, and UHD Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Martin County Youth Foundation, The Lutz Cancer Center (Fairmont), or Mayo Lymphoma Research (Rochester).
