Jim “JP” Edgington

BRANDON, S.D. — Jim “JP” Edgington, 85, of Brandon, S.D., formerly of Kansas City, Kan., passed away on Monday, Sept. 1, 2025, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 6, at George Boom Funeral Home in Brandon, S.D. Visitation with the family present will take place an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Sanford Hospice or the Shriner’s Hospital.

James Paul Edgington was born on Feb. 18, 1940, in West Bend, Iowa, to Eldon and Clovis (Singleton) Edgington. Jim’s family moved to Spencer, Iowa, for a short while, eventually returning to West Bend, where Jim graduated from West Bend High School in 1958.

Jim met Linda Stenzel of Burt, Iowa, in 1958 and they were united in marriage on Oct. 30, 1960, in Algona, Iowa. Jim and Linda spent the last 35 years living in Lenexa, Kan., recently moving to Brandon, S.D., in 2025, to be closer to family.

Auto racing was a big part of Jim’s life. He actively raced from 1964 to 1982, winning well over 50 races throughout his career. Jim won the Fairmont Raceways championship in 1967 and 1970, Jackson Speedway championship in 1970, Tri-State (Spencer) championship in 1966, 1967, 1969 and 1970, and Minnesota State Fair Modified championship in 1969 and 1970.

Jim worked as a promoter for Fairmont Raceway from 1976 to 1981. He promoted many county and state fairgrounds in Minn., S.D., Iowa, and Miss. Jim also worked as an assistant director for American Royal in Kansas City, MO, as well as a market manager for K.C. City Market.

After retirement, Jim enjoyed being a school bus driver for young kids, then moving on to tour/coach bus driving and was able to travel across the United States. It was also in retirement that Jim took up a fond interest in baking.

Jim is survived by his wife, Linda, of Brandon, S.D.; sons, Jeff (Molly) Edgington of Rapid City, S.D., and Todd (Lisa) Edgington of Fairmont, Minn.; sisters, Betty Rasumussen/Thul of West Bend, Iowa and Debra (John) Flor of Gretna, Nebr.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren with one more on the way; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Michael, and brothers-in-law, Bill Rasmussen and Rob Thul.
