Jean M. Maakestad
FAIRMONT — Private family services for Jean Marie Maakestad, 68, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont with burial held at a later date. A time for remembering and celebrating Jean’s life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Jean passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Jean Marie (Cox) Maakestad was born March 11, 1957, in Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of Roy and Viola (Streit) Cox. She grew up in Fairmont and graduated from Fairmont High School with the class of 1975.
On Sept. 24, 1976, Jean was united in marriage to Terry Maakestad in Fairmont, Minn. Together, the couple made their home for a short time in Lake Crystal, Minn., and returned to Fairmont, where they raised their three children, Maggie, Dominic, and Derek.
Jean and Terry both had an entrepreneurial spirit that led to successfully owning and operating several businesses throughout their 48 years of marriage.
Growing up in a large family, Jean found great importance in spending time with family and friends and looked forward to hosting those she cared about the most during the Holidays! She deeply loved her grandchildren and could be found supporting them in all of their activities. Jean enjoyed time spent outdoors, taking care of her flowers and tending to her home. She had a soft spot in her heart for her dogs and treasured their unconditional love. Through the years, Jean and Terry made many memories traveling, but she found her greatest peace at her home.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Terry Maakestad; children, Maggie (Troy) Sunken, Dominic (Erica) Maakestad, and Derek (Shawna) Maakestad; grandchildren, Clayton Maakestad (Hannah), Abigail Sunken, Benjamin Sunken, Madison Maakestad (Wyatt), Trevor Maakestad, Caden Wickert, Aspen Wickert, Stella Maakestad Samuel Maakestad, and Vivien Maakestad; mother-in-law, Jean Maakestad; siblings, Jane (John) Thate and Jim Cox; in-laws, Kelly (Mike) Sheehan, Kris Wenzel, Jon (Jill) Maakestad, and Norman Abel; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Viola Cox; father-in-law, Duane Maakestad; siblings, Sue Abel, Connie Munday, Mary Conrady, and Jerry Cox; and in-laws, Karen Cox and Lois Cox.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Jean’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and the Martin County Humane Society.
