Walter W. Haler
ELMORE — Funeral services for Walter W. Haler, 85, of Elmore, Minn., will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021, at the East Chain Evangelical Free Church in East Chain, Minn. Full military honors will be provided by Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1222. Burial will be held following the service at the East Chain Evangelical Free Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021, at East Chain Evangelical Free Church. Those wishing to view the service will be able to do so at a later date on www.eastchain.com. Walter passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2021, surrounded by his family at his home in Elmore, Minn. Walter William Haler was born May 27, 1936, to John and Francis (Ries) Haler in St. James, Minn. He received his education from Rosedale Township 56 country school in Watonwan County, Minn. On Nov. 13, 1956, Walter was drafted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country as a SPC E4 in France and was honorably discharged on Nov. 14, 1958.
On June 6, 1960, Walter was united in marriage to Greta Smidt at Ramsey Reformed Church in Titonka, Iowa. This marriage was blessed with six children, Maurice, Clare Ann, Judith, Edwin, Melvin and Gregory. Walter held several jobs throughout his lifetime which included farming, working in construction, the DeVries Sale Barn in Buffalo Center, Iowa, driving school bus for the East Chain School District, Elmore Truck Accessories and most recently for the City of Elmore Brush Site. Walter grew up farming and had a love for being in the outdoors and anything to do with farming. He loved being out on his tractor and enjoyed everything to do with farm life. In his later years, you could find him out gardening, splitting wood, and occasionally on a lake fishing. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends. Walter’s greatest enjoyment in life was his family and cherished the time spent with them.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-one years, Greta Haler; five children, Clare (Tom) Schisler, Judith (Dale) Anderson, Edwin Haler, Melvin (Tonya) Haler and Greg (Becky) Haler; grandchildren, Melissa Schisler, Mariah (Matt) Melde, Ambre (fiancé, Carl) Anderson, Jessica (J.D. “Judd”) Schroeder, Luke Haler, Lily Haler, Bryce (fiancé, Eden) Haler, Jared Haler, Starr (Josh) Oswald, Brandon Haler, and Brittania (fiancé, Chris) Haler; step-grandchildren, John (Megan) Anderson, Logan Anderson and Chelsea (Trent) Maakstead; great-grandchildren, Lucy and Oliver Melde, Cheyanne and Ayden Schroeder, Remi Oswald and Cassandra Haler; step-great-grandchildren, Aidan Waugh, Kailynn, Nolan and Jacob Anderson and Destyn and Dayton Maakstead; brother, Lawrence (Ruth) Haler; sister-in-law, JoAnn (Bill) McCloskey; many nieces and nephews; and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Francis Haler; son, Maurice Haler; brother, John (Lora Mae) Haler; sisters, Adeline (Orville) Kubly and Caroline (George) Anacker; and father and mother-in-law, Enko and Clara Smidt.
