Council approves new fire truck

SHERBURN — Sherburn City Council met Monday evening at the Sherburn City Hall. Mike Ringnell and Sam Meixell were there to explain the purchase order for the fire truck needed to replace the old 1986 pumper. After discussion, the Council approved the order

for $481,000+ for the truck. The price was ready to increase in December. The USDA grant has not been approved. They have a replacement fund but if they use all of that there would be no funds for future equipment. The replacement plan is to replace the ambulance in 2026 and another fire truck in 2030. They will apply for grants and solicit donations with fundraisers.

The Waste Management contract was discussed again since there were some City buildings that needed to be added and some that needed to be taken off the Waste Management route. They will approve the contract when that is straightened out.

The Council also approved the final payment on well #4 for

$103,000+ as planned. The lining of the sewer pipe in the City Hall basement by Precision Lining and Sewer Company will be done and that way they do not have to dig up the line. The company used a camera and saw a long crack.

The Council approved a donation from Federated Rural Electric Association (FREA) for the Sherburn Fire Department with thanks. They also approved adding the mowing expense for several properties on to the property taxes for the owners.

Travis Winter, engineer at Bolton and Menk, gave a report about the street construction project. He remarked that the concrete work was at a standstill due to the cold weather to preserve the quality of the concrete projects. The signs have been picked up and some mailboxes have been returned to yards. When asked about the timeline, he approximated the concrete work to begin in April, 2023, and the project to be done in late fall of next year. This is way ahead of their original timeline because of the exceptionally good

weather.

Chief of Police, Trevor Yochim, reported that there will be a new full-time officer as Carolyn Jacobsen will go from part-time to full-time. A new squad car was received and will be outfitted soon. The Welcome Sherburn Police are looking for part-time officers.

The search for a deputy clerk is on. Applications and job description are at the city hall and on the website, www.cityofsherburn.com. For more information, call Sherburn City Hall at (507) 764-4491.

Council reports were happy with the good school play last weekend and the audience numbers.

Discussions about the continuing disclosure report, needed if a bond should be needed, included updates about debts, businesses, water projects, etc. The Council also approved cigarette and beer licenses for Kum-N-Go, Caseys, and Dollar General.

The next meeting of the Sherburn City Council is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Dec. 5, at the Sherburn City Hall.
