MINNEAPOLIS -- Prep football's irresistible force paradox.
The No. 5-ranked Fairmont Cardinals entered Saturday's Class AAA Prep Bowl championship game with a 33.4-point scoring average, while the No. 2-ranked Rochester Lourdes Eagles' defense had allowed only 8.2 points per outing.
Tackle Riley Schaefer and Lourdes' smothering defense halted two first-half Fairmont drives inside the 10-yard line, while tailback Zach Jungels amassed a game-best 233 rushing yards and two touchdowns to power the Eagles to a 24-7 triumph over the Cardinals at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
"The bottom line is this game comes down to our defense stopping Fairmont's offense," said Lourdes head coach Mike Kesler, who engineered the school's fourth championship during his program's 10th state appearance in the last 14 years. The Eagles won their other state crowns in 2010, 2014 and 2016.
Lourdes utilized its powerful 1-2 offensive punch of Jungels and fullback Jake Groteboer to fuel an eight-play, 50-yard scoring drive that ended with 1:37 remaining in the opening quarter. Groteboer's bulldozing 4-yard touchdown run up the middle and Ben Limburg's PAT kick proved the only points of the first half.
"Lourdes runs the option almost to perfection. If you stop the fullback (Groteboer), then you have to contend with the quarterback (Matthew Hayford) keeping it. If you stop the quarterback, then you have to contain the pitch man (Jungels). They were hard to defend," said Fairmont head coach Mat Mahoney, whose lineup captured runner-up honors for the second time during his program's fourth state bid in his 12th season at the helm.
Trailing 7-0, Zac Ringnell's 23-yard kickoff return put the Cardinals' offense in business at its own 28-yard line near the end of the first frame.
Running back Jordan Wolter, who finished his outstanding prep career with a team-leading 105 rushing yards on 20 totes, literally carried Fairmont into Lourdes territory on the strength of two battering 13-yard runs and an ensuing 13-yard reception from quarterback Garrett Myren.
Lourdes defensive end Mark Ustby's 9-yard quarterback sack later moved Fairmont backward to the Eagles' 19 before Myren's 5-yard run and an ensuing horse-collar infraction inched the football to the 7-yard line.
Facing third-and-goal-to-go, Hayford -- who also plays safety -- nearly intercepted Myren's pass to the right pylon before another Cardinal incompletion halted the drive at the 7-yard line with no points.
Following a near-interception by Schultz, Fairmont's defense forced a punt with less than 5 minutes remaining in the first half.
After Limburg's punt pinned the Cardinals at their own 2-yard line, Myren threaded a 37-yard spiral to Schultz along the left sideline to move out of the shadow of their own goal line.
Myren, who completed 16 of 28 passes for a game-best 218 yards, spotted academic all-state receiver Hayden Berhow for a key 10-yard completion before Wolter pounded out 19 yards on back-to-back carries to reach the Lourdes' 16.
Myren later scrambled to convert a fourth-and-6 situation by reaching the 10, but Eagles safety Trey Billmeier defended the ensuing slant pass on the final play of the first half to turn away the Cardinals empty-handed again.
"We nearly matched them yard-for-yard offensively, but we couldn't convert that into many points, so give their defense credit for accomplishing that," said Mahoney, whose offense generated 334 total yards to Lourdes' 340.
Fairmont produced its only points of the state finale during the opening possession of the third quarter. Hudson Artz's 17-yard kickoff return placed the football at the 18.
Wolter broke a couple of tackles before reeling off a key 27-yard run to reach the Cardinals' 45 before Myren went to the air. Fairmont's senior quarterback zipped a spiral to Thomas Johnson, who eluded a Lourdes tackler and sprinted to a 55-yard TD. Jack Hested kicked the PAT to tie the game at 7-all with 10:32 remaining in the third.
The Eagles, however, answered with a time-consuming run-oriented march downfield that culminated in Limburg's 36-yard field goal for a narrow 10-7 lead with 4:33 left in the third quarter. Jungels hammered, twisted and turned out 51 of the Eagles' 68 yards during the drive.
Down by three, Myren utilized a shorter passing game plan to ignite the Cardinals' next possession. Myren hit Johnson for a 6-yard out pattern, connected with Berhow for 12 more and a 6-yard screen to Wolter. Unfortunately for Fairmont, a fumble on the next completion led to Lourdes defensive back Will Kopischke's recovery -- the only turnover of the game -- with 13 seconds to go in the third.
Jungels needed only four touches during the next series before taking Hayford's pitch around the right end, hurdled would-be tacklers and sprinted 50 yards for his first TD. Limburg's PAT kick widened Lourdes' lead to 17-7 with 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Schaefer's 6-yard quarterback sack on third-and-5 at the Eagles' 30, followed by another Hayford tipped pass on fourth down, halted the Cardinals' next drive at the 36.
Once again, Jungels took the handoff over the right side, broke a couple of tackles and reached the end zone from 22 yards out. Limburg's kick made it 24-7 with 1:45 remaining to seal the state crown.
Groteboer finished with 77 yards and one TD on 11 carries for Lourdes, which completed a perfect season with a 14-0 record.
Wolter also topped all receivers by making seven catches for 67 yards for Fairmont, which ended the season at 11-2.
