New store set to open
It has been a long time since the floor space of the former Kmart building in Fairmont has been used as a retail outlet. Since Kmart closed, in fact. So it is heartening to see Tractor Supply Co. preparing for its store opening on June 21.
The business will utilize about one-third of the building. While still setting up, store employees have seen travelers along Highway 15 already stopping to ask questions and hoping to do some shopping. That bodes well for public interest in the site.
We wish Tractor Supply Co. good luck as it moves forward.
Some accomplishments
The Minnesota legislative session turned out to be much less productive than it could have been, because of the political impasse that exists between Gov. Mark Dayton and Republican lawmakers who control the House and Senate. For instance: the federal tax conformity issue now looms over all Minnesotans.
There was some good news for the Fairmont area. Several area projects have garnered state funding. These will help cities with infrastructure issues. Area roads and bridges will likewise benefit.
Public employees and taxpayers will benefit as well, in wake of major pensions reforms.
Settlement reached
The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis this week agreed to settle claims against it by 450 people who say they are victims of Catholic clergy sexual abuse. The church will pay out $210 million.
Archbishop Bernard Hebda offered a clear message to victims, saying he recognized that the abuse they suffered stole their childhoods, their ability to trust and, for many, their faith.
What happened across the world to abuse victims is disgusting and horrifying. The church is properly trying to make amends. It also must ensure it never happens again.
Summer shows coming
The Fairmont Opera House is a local gem, with a special tie to this newspaper. Frank A. Day, founder of the Sentinel, pushed for the creation of the Opera House more than 100 years ago. His legacy is intact today.
