Foreign spies and criminals in Washington, D.C., are using devices that can intercept cellphone calls and text messages from unaware users, it was revealed this week. The Department of Homeland Security made the admission in answer to a request by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore.
What should concern thoughtful Americans is that the question ever had to be asked. The technology is nothing new. U.S. law enforcement agencies use it.
Of course, criminals and foreign countries are using it to spy on us for both financial and national security reasons of their own.
Russians using social media to influence our elections? Horrors!
Moscow using nerve gas to kill a former turncoat spy in England? Terrible!
Supposed allies bugging our embassies? Unbelievable!
Perhaps the end of the Cold War deluded us into thinking that afterward, even unfriendly nations would refrain from spying on us and attempting to influence our government. If so, we were foolish. The world still is a dangerous place.
