Support appreciated

To the Editor:

The Fairmont Uptown Kiwanis Club thanks Hy-Vee for the hot dogs and buns and Perkins for the ice for the baseball fundraisers in June and July at the Fairmont Elementary School ball diamonds.

A special thanks to the volunteer coaches and families of the players for their support throughout the season and for their patronage of the fundraisers.

Cookoff still a success

To the Editor:

The 21st annual Blue Ribbon Pork Cookoff was held Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the Martin County Fairgrounds. Awards for both the Connoisseurs' Choice and the Peoples' Choice went to Cup N' Saucer of Sherburn (1st Place), Jessie's Smokehouse of Fairmont (2nd Place) and The Blazer Bar & Grill of Fairmont (3rd Place). Congratulations to our 2018 cookoff winners.

We want to thank our many volunteers who have helped to make this event a success over the course of its 21-year history.

Proceeds from this event support two local $4,200 Agri-Business Scholarships each year. Thank you to our generous event sponsors, the Agri-Business Committee of the Fairmont Area Chamber, Bank Midwest, Cargill Inc., CFS, Compeer Financial, Dutch Creek Farms, Fairmont Veterinary Clinic, Kahler Automation, Martin County Corn & Soybean Growers, Martin County Pork Producers, Preferred Capital Management, Profinium Financial and Valero Renewables for helping to make these scholarships possible.

We would also like to thank our contestants: Ambiance on Albion Taphouse & Grill, The Blazer Bar & Grill, Cup N' Saucer Restaurant, Fairmont Butcher Block, Green Mill Restaurant, Jessie's Smokehouse, The Marina Lodge and Scotty Biggs BBQ for the time and talent they contributed to this competition. Each of the eight contestants made a valiant effort, producing creative, mouth-watering pork inspired dishes, and presenting a formidable challenge for both judges and participants alike in selecting this year's winning entries.

Remember to mark your calendars for our 22nd annual Blue Ribbon Pork Cookoff to be held Aug. 14, 2019.
