FAIRMONT — Verlon Arthur Jones was born March 10, 1926, at the Halloran Hospital in Jackson, Minn., the son of Virgil and Louise (Bieser) Jones. As a child, Verlon attended Jackson Public Schools, graduating from Jackson High School in 1944.
After high school, Verlon was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served in the Pacific Theater during World War ll. Verlon was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon his return, he attended Veterans Ag School in Jackson.
He married Luella Rieken on April 77, 1947, at Salem Lutheran Church. After marriage, Verlon farmed with his father and brother Howard.
In 1989, Verlon and Luella moved to Fairmont, at which point he took on more of a supervisory role in the family’s farm operation.
In September of 2017, Verlon and Luella moved into the Goldfinch Estates Assisted Living Facility, where Verlon passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at the age of 91 years, eight months and 25 days.
Verlon was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. After marriage, Verlon became a member of Salem Lutheran Church.
He was a lifetime member of the Jackson VFW and American Legion Posts, playing “Taps” for their funeral detail.
Verlon was a very social person who truly loved meeting new people. He always had a pocket full of candy which he would hand out to his new acquaintances. He lovingly became known as the “Candy Man” everywhere he went.
Verlon loved working the land as a farmer. lt was his true love. In his later years, when he wasn’t working so much, he and Luella enjoyed taking drives around the country, and visiting California, Florida and Louisiana, among other places.
Verlon is survived by his wife of 70 years, Luella, of Fairmont; his three daughters, Catherine (Harry) Diamond of Sacramento, Calif., Suzanne (Randy) Olson of Jackson, and Teresa (Steve) Sathe of Lake Tahoe, Nev.; his son, Vron (Amy) Jones of Rosemount Minn.; his six grandchildren, Cynthia Mansfield, Brian Christenson, Paul Sathe, Matthew Sathe, Vincent Jones, and Abigail Jones; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mildred Eggiman;and several nieces and nephews.
Verlon was preceded in death by his parents; and his three siblings and their spouses, Lillian (Hilbert) Schluter, Howard (Blanche) Jones, and Darlene (Lester) Oie.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson, with Pastor Vicki Hultine officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Jackson.
Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Saturday at Osterberg Funeral Home, prior to the service.
