Fairmont speech wins subsection
FAIRMONT -- Fairmont Area recently won the 2A subsection north speech tournament in Sherburn. Fairmont scored 213 points in the team sweepstakes. Mankato Loyola was second with 114 points.
Twenty-nine Cardinals advanced to the section tournament to be held Friday in St Peter. Results follow:
First place -- Lexi Fischer in creative expression, Kara Fischer in dramatic interpretation, Emma Koehler in poetry reading and Apoorva Komaragiri in prose reading; second place -- Isabell Geiger and Tabitha Thatcher in duo interpretation, Weston Loughmiller in extemporaneous speaking, Evan Carlson in great speeches, Izzy Munsch in humorous interpretation, Grace Higgins in original oratory and Ben Hernes in prose reading; third place -- Bergen Senf in discussion, Faith Heille in dramatic interpretation, Emily Kerekes in extemporaneous reading, Lily Steuber in extemporaneous speaking, Maddy Pierce in great speeches, Sydney Hainy in humorous interpretation, Ameya Komaragiri in original oratory, Flavia Correa in poetry reading and Annika Wheeler in storytelling; fourth place -- Eric Head in creative expression, Eleanor Hamlet in extemporaneous reading and McKenna Mathews in informative speaking; fifth place -- Tabitha Willner in poetry reading and Bethany Linse in storytelling; sixth place -- Ellie Hernes and Laura Thompson in duo interpretation, Paige Linse in humorous interpretation and Ethan Grunewald in informative speaking.
The Cardinals will perform at a speech showcase 1 p.m. Sunday at the high school in Fairmont.
Community gardens sign-up begins
FAIRMONT -- Fairmont residents who would like to grow their own garden but do not have adequate space can sign up for a free garden plot with Rural Advantage.
Garden plots are 20 feet by 20 feet. The plots are private garden in a community space. Those who would like to have a plot or who have questions may contact Rural Advantage at (507) 238-5449 or email linda@ruraladvantage.org. Leave a name, phone number and email.
Area students win scholarships
JACKSON -- Federated Rural Electric in Jackson has announced that two students will receive $1,000 Federated/Basin scholarships.
Jessica Christoffer of Round Lake is a senior at Jackson County Central High School who will attend South Dakota State University and major in food science and technology. Hannah Johanson of Elmore graduated from Granada-Huntley-East Chain and is a freshman at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa, majoring in dental hygiene.
